Hanged -v- Hung.

I was reading about Jolly Roger's on wikipedia, and came across an entry for one "Christopher Moody." The first paragraph states that he was "hanged," and when I read it I couldn't help but wonder if the person should have used hung instead of hanged. SP, which would be the proper word to use in that instance, or does it really not matter?

Hanged is considered outdated, I believe. It is still understood and not entirely pointless. I just don't think it would be used too often.

Hang has two forms for the past tense and past participle, hanged and hung. The historically older form hanged is now used exclusively in the sense of causing or putting to death: He was sentenced to be hanged by the neck until dead. In the sense of legal execution, hung is also quite common and is standard in all types of speech and writing except in legal documents. When legal execution is not meant, hung has become the more frequent form: The prisoner hung himself in his cell.

One of my high school English teachers always said "hanged" is exclusively for hanging people, hung is for everything else.
