No, you don't have to buy songs from the iTunes store, but you DO have to download iTunes itself (along with what the pineapple ever.. Quicktime). To add existing songs to your music library, you must go to "Add file to library..." or use the Ctrl+O shortcut and add your songs manually. Then you plug in your iPod via USB and your iPod will sync itself with your music library/video/photos/whatever including playlists you have made.

Change your iPod settings to Storage Device (I think that's the one) so you can drag and drop instead of having to resync every fucking time you want to add a new song. It becomes a pain when your library is 1000+ songs, and there are some you want, some you don't want, and some that are new.
There should be a tutorial on the iPod site on how to set up your iTunes and iPod in any case.
