I had planned to do it with the 10 Maplepoints I'll eventually get from the marathon event, but I got so frustrated with transferring that I MTS'd a 10 atk WG just to buy extra slots. 6.4k for 8 extra slots isn't a bad deal at all.
As for the question at hand, I went with all three.
I think that, for the most part, the potions from
Alchemy are absolutely useless. The only thing I really like it for is the fusing. Of course, that's a bit misleading since I think fusing items is absolutely amazing.
Fusing makes for a very easy method of leveling the skill and has so far netted me plenty of low-leveled %-stat items. However, it won't find its true usefulness until I have easy access to high level equips.
That leads me to
Smithing. The attraction of this profession lies in the fact that it will allow me to make any third-tier equipment I want (though there are no color options, which is sad). This means I can easily mass-produce equipment with Potential on it and transfer them over to my Alchemist to fuse my way to Unique equipment. As I haven't invested much into my equipment, I can easily boost my damage this way. Sadly, maining a warrior, I won't be able to make third-tier tops and bottoms with an 100% success rate until I have level 6 Smithing. Then again, making arrows provides a brilliantly simple method of leveling up.
Jeweling was originally the most attractive profession to me for what may be an obvious reason. Basically, it would allow me to fill in the gaps in my equipment and upgrade items that were previously too costly to upgrade.
Once I have a high enough level, I'll be able to make Shoulderpads, Belts, and Face Accessories - all equipment types that most of my characters don't have.
So my advice would definitely be to buy some extra storage space and work on all three.
The only downside to this method I've found is keeping track of what materials need to be where.
