I'd say go for it, if you liked previous Nintendo games. I actually love mine, because of some of the Nintendo games i was used to. Super Paper Mario Adventure was one that actually surprised me, as i wasn't actually impressed by it in the first time, but after playing and getting into the story, i found it to be a very, very good game. The same goes to the other Mario series games, as Super Mario Galaxy 2 and that Wario Land.
The other games are actually good too. Some average, depends much on what you like, not what others like. Metroid: Other M was awesome, i liked it very much because of the fact it's more "alive" than the other Metroid games for the console. No offense, but i found Metroid Prime, although a good storyline and good graphics, to be extremely boring in the aspect i barely did anything until the end of the game other than aiming and shooting at everything i saw, not that FPS games should be much different, but heavens, some things could have changed in the atmosphere.
The other good thing about it is that i can play the classics on it. GBcolor, GBA, SNES and even PSX emulators are there, and that's plain awesome since i spent a lot playing the classics i missed so much lately. I'd say buy it, but first, be aware of what's there, don't expect a shitload of awesome graphics, because these aren't even that good, if you're looking for fun, and you're into casual gaming, go for it. If not, nevermind it and look for anything else. :o

If you love first party Nintendo games, then the Wii is well worth it for you. Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 have probably been my hands down favorites on the Wii and they'll keep you busy for a decent amount of time. Twilight Princess was fun and it's another title that's well worth it for how much time you'll be spending on it. Since you say you like the Paper Mario series, you'll also probably enjoy Super Paper Mario despite the fact that they took out the traditional turn-based gameplay.
Hm, as for miscellaneous other recommendations: Muramasa, No More Heroes, Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love, and Monster Hunter Tri.

The Wii is worth buying just for Muramasa. The game is phenomenal and cheap on Amazon and in local video game stores. Was totally undersold and didn't get a big rise to fame, but it is a hidden gem.

The only problem I have ever had with that game was it was too f`ucking short. There's not much replay value or I'm missing something.

If you like platformers :yes. The wii has plenty of these. New super mario bros, Donkey kong country, Kirby Epic yarn, Mario galaxy 1/2, Metroid: other m, Wario land: The shake dimension, and probably more I'm forgetting. Theres quite a few on wiiware as well.
There are quite a lot of other wii games I would recommend as well: Ignoring anything thats not (to my knowledge) Nintendo exclusive:
Sin and Punishment 2, Mario Kart wii, Smash bros, Sonic Colours, Muramasa: the demon blade, Red Steel 2 (Not 1, for the love of god, not 1), Metroid Prime Trilogy, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Rune Factory Frontier, Zack and Wiki.
Probably some more but these ones stick out in my memory. Theres a few other games worth getting, like Okami, but thats a port of the PS2 game. Still, if you haven't played it, you should make sure you get at least one of the two versions. It's an excellent game.
Anyway, the main problem is, of all the games I mentioned above, most of them are made by nintendo, so the real question is, do you like nintendo games? If you do, get a wii. If you don't, don't bother.

Personally, I own (yes, own, not pirated) 3 times the amount of disks for the system in Virtual Console titles. And I no longer support emulation, but I do have to say, the pricing setup for the Nintendo shop is not very good. (Ironically enough I was buying them for the very fact that I had pirated them in the past.) First off, they NEVER have had a sale in the history of the system. Games run from 5-12 for VC, and up to 15 for WiiWare, not including DLC for several. Some games that would be great to have either don't look like they're coming, or cannot come (ie RARE).
I mean, I won't dispute that I've had some good times on the platformers and other first party titles Nintendo has put out, but I feel that I could have got a better deal somehow. It's been predominately underused since I've bought it, and I've probably spent 50x the time on my DS by now if not more.
