Why do couples try to pair up so that one male is "masculine" and the other is "feminine"? This question also applies to lesbians, though the only active one on SP is Spidey.

I've heard that there are a lot of gays looking for the more masculine partners too (and they are apparently rarer), I don't think all do though.

That's not always the case. On the websites i visit there's ads that describe the person as masculine looking for another masculine man.

I'm not asking whether they do or not. I'm asking why it happens, because then they can just look for the opposite gender and become a part of mainstream society. For the record, most of the gays I know have the mentality stated in the first post.

The problem is that you're asking why something happens when it might not actually happen at all.

Some men are into masculine women and vice versa as well. I assume sexual orientation and personality are not entirely intertwined.

Would you go out with a really feminine guy?

Then why would a gay person go out with someone of the opposite sex?

I think that's the whole point he's making (as I was). Levels of femininity/masculinity do not change the sexual orientation of the person.

Hmm, I guess everyone likes to have someone they can "lean on"? At least that's my guess as to what you meant with masculine personality. I'd say that the best couples are able to swap gender "roles" as needed or wanted and can effectively be what their partner needs at different times. Sometimes a person needs to feel relied on, sometimes they need to have someone to rely on, sometimes you want to be in the arms of the one you love, sometimes you want to hold the person you love, etc. <.< Hmm, dunno if that really answered things, but whatever.

It's a matter of preference. Just like some guys prefer tomboy and girls want a sensitive.

This. Duh.
And what Loose said. It's all a matter of preference. Would you say that, statistically speaking, couples of ANY sexual orientation gravitate towards "masculine/feminine" or "dominant/passive" dualisms? Perhaps, but there are plenty of instances where that's not the case, enough so to make this thread slightly ridiculous as to not provide this as an option. I'd fit this perfectly, as I don't mind clear-cut dualism every now and then, but would ultimately prefer a partner where gender roles are fluid/undefined. Physicality and personality fits the given situation, with (obviously) changes fluctuating in the realm of personality and the physicality to inherently, adequately, contribute to either role.
