Hello again Maplers!
MapleStory isnt just a game, its a community. Thats why as developers, we have to think carefully about the way we create environments because they have a powerful impact on how the community develops. One of the most straightforward examples of this is the game world structure in MapleStory. There are 14 game worlds, each existing as a (mostly) isolated collection of Maplers. Each world has its own personality and economy, and many are different from a technological standpoint as well. Today Ill be talking about our game worlds and how were thinking about changing them in the future.

How and Why Are Game Worlds Different?

Each game world is made up of two parts.

- The database: Each world has its own database which stores all the information for all of the characters on that world.

- The channel servers: These servers actually contain the world and manage the interaction between the player and the database.
Both parts of the game world impose a limitation on how many players can be in that world at one time. We could add ten more channel servers to Scania, but if no change was made to the database, Scanias capacity for players would not go up. Similarly, we could make the database bigger, but that would not allow more players to be in the same channel.

While all game worlds are technologically the same, from a player perspective, they are each distinct. Some have fewer channels. El Nido is hosted on the east coast of North America while all the others are hosted on the west coast. Some cannot access the Maple Trading System (MTS). Some are crowded while others can feel lonely. All of these differences are due to the communitys needs, not technological difference. Some, like the lack of MTS access for new worlds, are done by us in order to prevent rapid changes to a worlds economy while its developing. Others, like the population imbalances, are not.

State of Game Worlds
Since some differences between game worlds are unintentional, like the population levels, does that mean that some game worlds are unhealthy? Perhaps surprisingly, for most worlds the answer is no. Some players prefer the quiet of a less populated world, and some prefer new worlds with smaller economies. Some worlds develop a strong personality that attracts a lot of players and some dont. All of this is good and normal and most of our worlds are doing great, but sometimes there are worlds on the extreme ends of the population spectrum that need some help.

Overpopulated Worlds

Scania faces this problem. Its the most popular world in Global MapleStory, and naturally, it became overcrowded and has reached its population limit. This summer we will experiment with new structures to increase Scanias capacity, but theres a limit to what can be done. MapleStory was simply not designed to be a one server game.

We could also restrict new character creation on Scania, but we dont want to do this. Weve always believed that players should be free to play where they want. Freezing Scanias population could have severe effects on its community and the economy. Instead, we have some ideas to encourage players to move out of Scania in favor of less populated worlds. We can hold more events in lower population worlds, offer a certain number of free character transfers out of Scania, or even restrict character creation in Scania instead of cutting it off completely.

While we consider our options, we want to hear from you. What would encourage you to move out of Scania? Please share your thoughts and suggestions on our forums. Ultimately we want to preserve Scanias strengths but make the gameplay experience more pleasant by relieving the overcrowding.

Underpopulated Worlds

Some players certainly like peace and quiet in their game worlds, but no one likes living in a ghost town. With too few people, it becomes difficult to gather players for Party Quests, form healthy guilds, have a functioning economy, or just find someone to talk to. Eventually when a world falls under a certain population, it becomes a vicious cycle: no one wants to move there or create new characters, and frustrated players move to more populous servers. This only worsens the problem.

A few worlds in MapleStory are suffering from this, so we need to figure out a solution for it. Traditionally, online games have solved this problem with a server merge. Basically, all of the players from two low population servers are forcibly moved to a new, single server that contains both populations. However, we decided we didnt want to do this. First, MapleStory is growing. The problem is not a lack of players to fill our servers, but rather poor distribution. We also dont want to force players to move. Players feel very strongly connected to their world, and thats not something we want to mess with.

Weve tried a variety of methods over the past year to alleviate this population balance issue without a server merge. Weve reorganized the world select screen. We direct new users to underpopulated worlds. We open world transfers to new worlds sooner, but none of it has been as effective as it needs to be. Thats why we developed a system to create world alliances. This allows low population worlds to play with each other without removing the individual character of each world.

The way it works is that both worlds still exist. Theyll remain on the select screen and players will log into them as they always have. Whichever world youre from, youll continue to be from. Whatever benefits you have from that world, youll still have them. The only change is that players from both worlds will be able to play together, form guilds, get married, and generally do all the things players can do with other players in their own world. From the perspective of a player in either world, itll be as though you just had a huge influx of new players into your world. Were really excited about this approach and well be trying it out this month. Stay tuned for an announcement about which worlds will be involved.

Thats all for now, I hope this has given you some insight into game worlds and their future. Continue to check the website for the latest details on more changes coming soon!

Until next time!

Uh, wasn't the merge he talked about the same exact thing as the "world alliance"? It's what SEA did years ago.

Um... isn't that the exact same thing as a WORLD MERGE, Nexon America? That's what KMS has done in the past...

Isn't this essentially a server merge? :f6:

Sounds like world merges are coming to GMS.

Yellonde? Expecting/10

I hope this really helps out smaller worlds because I'm bored with so few people I know in Bellocan.

Merge Zenith with Bera, please. That will get rid of my buying a world transfer delima.

Well, the way they worded it, looks like you'll have x2 the slots for a character, the blessing only affects each half, halved storages...

Only difference is, a world alliance gives your account 2 copies of pretty much everything. (cash shop, storage, etc.)

I don't understand his wording? It sounds exactly like a merge to me. ;_;

Anyways aww, I really like Galacia's population and I hope it doesn't get merged.. Big Grin

Yeah, that's what they did in KMS.

Each world intertwines with each other, but each world is "separate." You can log into one of the <number> of worlds that are connected with each other and play with your friends, guild mates, etc., but you can't transfer money, items, and the like between the characters in different "worlds" unless you use a trusted person or another computer to do so.

I don't like the sound of that.
To me it sounds like they will merge the worlds, but make two entry points to the merged world. The merged world will have two names, that's all. I bet if you do a "/find" on someone who logged in from the other world, you'll get the reply that they're in your world.
If you can marry someone from the other world, you can be on the same map. If you can be on the same map, you can KS... We of the small worlds lose our biggest benefit, that of having space to train and a decent chance at finding free-spawning bosses or an FM spot.

And Nexon gains the machines they used for one of the worlds... so they can create another new one with zip population but much promotion? Eurydice does say the freed-up computers will definitely not be used to add channels to Scania and other crowded worlds.

Do Not Want.

It sounded to me like TRADITIONALLY (as in games other than maplestory) a merge involved literally taking all the data from one world and copy pasting to a different one, then deleting the other world. However, TRADITIONALLY (as in maplestory) a merge involved linking two servers just like he described without deleting/C&Ping anything which also means less room for error. Kind of an accent misinterpretation there.

@above: No, i don't think doing this will free up any hardware for them to use/sell.

"offer a certain number of free character transfers out of Scania"

I've read this somewhere.. hmm. That'd be somewhat a good thing to do

I don't get this world alliance. It's unclear, and from the sound of it, it's better to just say merge.

For example, in Aika, when you chose a server to play, it'd pop up with two choices. One was PvE, where no one could leave or enter that server. The second was PvP, where anyone could come and go to any of the five servers. Both were completely separate as well. Would it be like that? Either way, we'll find out this month, I guess.

Here's to hoping for a Mardia/Zenith alliance.

Though this would be great, I honestly prefer Bera/Zenith. That solves a lot of problems, especially for the Southperry alliance.

well, the difference between a server merge and a player merge is that both worlds still act as separate worlds, stuff that would affect one of the 2 worlds, will affect only players from such job, so if a 2x event goes on for only one world, only that population would benefit from it. not to mention what stereo said, you would basically be entitled to 6 characters (new account, 3 in one, 3 in the other) and cash shop items would be separate.

i am pretty sure world transfers would also work in this case between the 2 worlds, although only reason you would have to do this would be to move account-bound items to the players in the other half of the world, and CS items.

you could think of it as seeing people from a parallel dimension i guess o.O

Personally, I'd be more worried about whether or not Nexon can make a world alliance successfully without any glaring errors. :|

Oh god... Bera + Zenith would make a HUGE SP Alliance. @_@

This sounds confusing. All I would really want is to have a normal amount of channels back and to have Chaos Horntail available in Mardia and the other worlds with only 13 channels. If this world merge thing allows the smaller worlds to have 19 or 20 channels again I'd be satisfied. Also,
