How did you started listening to the music genres that you enjoy today?

Hmm, well my musical history is rather interesting, if I had to chart it out, it'd probably go something like this:

Classical/Christian -> Christian Rock -> Rock/Pop, mostly Top 40 stuff -> Power Metal -> Nu Metal -> Folk Metal -> Progressive Metal -> Progressive Rock -> Electronica -> Rock/Pop/Rap -> Avant Garde Metal/Rock -> Ecclectic Mix of all of the previous, though I must admit I don't listen to too much Christian music any more as the lyrical content can grate after a time

For a while, all my parents really let me listen to was Classical and Christian music. Not so much because they were against any other music, they have their faves from the 80s, 90s, etc. It's just they didn't want to expose my sister and I to a lot of the music that they felt was inapproriate for children. After I was a bit older, but still not quite a teen yet, I listened to a popular rock/pop station quite a bit. Mostly Top 40 stuff, so nothing too crazy I suppose. Then, around the time we moved out of that are and into the middle of nowhere, I was introduced to metal via my Uncle. Though he'd always had it on around me, that was when I really started to enjoy it and actively look for it myself. There were other bands than just power metal ones during that time, but if I look at what I listened to at that time, that's what fits best. From that, I eventually started getting into Nu Metal, though I can't say I didn't listen to it before then, or after, it got very similar after a while. Sometime after that stage I started to want to get back into other Metal, and found myself listening to a lot of Folk Metal. I mostly blame Skyclad for that one, again thanks to my Uncle's influence. From there, and again with my Uncle's help, I started going towards Progressive Metal. There's a rather large variety when it comes to Progressive Metal, so I was again satisfied for quite a while. Throughout most of this time period, I continued to listen to other stuff as well, but again, my main genres at the time were fairly obvious. There's probably a short time span of rock/pop/rap/etc, but as it was a relatively short time frame, I don't think it really bears mentioning too much. Shortly after that I hit a period of intense Electronica, highlighted by a weekend of almost constant electronica music playing, with very little sleep, and playing even while I was asleep. My parents were not amused, but I was at the other end of the house and it didn't last for too much longer after that weekend. Anyway with that out of my system, I eventually got back into more mainsteam things, and even went back to some of the stuff I had listened to in my younger days, a variety of things, but mostly mainstream current rock/pop/rap. Anyway, at some point, things became rather generic as far as most of that goes, so I started looking for stuff that was different, thus leading me into the ecclectic world of Avant Garde Metal and Rock. There's a lot of variety, and bands that have wildly different songs with wildly different insturments, and all sorts of crazy stuff included in. That lasted me a while, but eventually I realized that I can't stay in any one genre too long. I like a variety of things and I especially love listening to lots and lots of new stuff. So now I pretty much take and listen to whatever I happen to feel like at the time. Depending on the mood, I might pick some sort of rap, or perhaps it's more of a pop night, or if I'm feeling like just having some background music, maybe some electronica or folk metal. Or perhaps some progressive stuff of some kind. XP So I now listen to an ecclectic mix most of the time, or a very selective one genre for a relatively short time. About the only thing I really can't listen to at this point is country. I can listen to most other music without cringing, but that just kills me inside for some reason.

Because I'm bored.

I don't really know genres that well...so I'll just list some artists, ha.
Basically, started out listening to whatever Usher/Outkast/Ludacris/Black Eyes Peas was on the radio. Then moved on to Boys Like Girls/Faber Drive/Simple Plan/Green Day. After that, I started looking for some older stuff, Queen/Bon Jovi/KISS... Also, I got into some obscure indie stuff, but quickly got sick of that hipster pomegranate. Went to Freezepop/Postal Service, then sort of stuck to Top 40 stuff for a while. Then Glee introduced me to musicals...and the internet introduced me to dubstep...and my friends introduced me to K-pop. That stuff's like nicotine to me, urghh. GEE GEE GEE GEE BABY BABY

So that's where I'm at now. A weird blend of everything.
