Maplestory2 is coming out in CBT this year(2011)

Curious for more details...

If you recall, it took over two years for DNF to even make it over to America, and an equally long time for Maplestory. It's just going into CBT for Korea. I doubt this is coming our way anytime soon.

My reaction is this. Not enough details about it though so I'm just going to ignore it until then.

They announced something like this back in '09. My theory is that it will come out on December 21st 2012. People will understand that everything they worked for, their perfect gear in Maplestory 1 becomes obsolete. Everyone on Maple will explode at the same time, making December 21st 2012 the actual end of the world.

Though it might result in that, a sequel to a mmorpg need not in any way mean the end of the first. It does not go hand in hand.

It better not be in 3D. 2D platformer style is what made Maple great.

The biggest thing for me here is how they are going to change the battle system, I'm sure we can all agree that fighting on Maplestory right now isn't the best.. It's nice and simple and all, but it's not very exciting. So I can't wait to see how that system is going to change and what the graphics will look like, 3D would be nice if executed correctly to still keep the Maplestory feel.. I don't see much they could do to make a 2D game more exciting, fighting wise.

Completely new game, completely new engine.

Maplestory is quite old. Why rework the entire engine to bring it up to date? Its not like it pumps that much money out like other MMOs.

EDIT: It also means they're gonna milk the pineapple out of Maplestory 1 til its last breath most likely. If Maplestory 2 goes well, they'll stop development for Maplestory 1, the servers will still run until it doesn't make enough profit.

Actually, it's probably only second to WoW, and maybe a couple more.

So yeah. I don't really see why wouldn't they rework the entire engine. It'd be awesome, users would love it and they'd earn much more money, since many people would come back if the compatibility issues are gone and the entire game engine is revamped.

Sadly, I think you're right about what's going to happen.

That said, I really hope it won't happen. And if it will, I hope it won't be anytime soon. I predict that MapleStory will live for at least 10 more years, seeing how big of a game it is. Maybe even more, especially if MapleStory 2 will be a failure.

You also didn't take into consideration that they might as well manage MapleStory 2 as a completely separate game, and keep updating MapleStory normally, maybe even, one day, updating the core engine of the game.

A good example of a case where this is true would be Dofus and Wakfu. Wakfu is the sequel to Dofus, but they went ahead and made a massive graphical overhaul to Dofus, and keep adding updates to both games.

We don't even know what Maplestory2 really is yet... If it's a completely different game (i.e. not a 2D platformer MMORPG), Maplestory won't feel anything at all.

If they make another 2d platformer then it would easily replace the Maplestory we already have. I'm hoping for a 3D version so that Maplestory (1 I guess you can call it) will stay alive D: I doubt they'd totally throw the Maplestory we have now away anyways because of all the work they are getting at now in increasing our content.
