Meshes of the Afternoon is one of my personal favorites for when I'm feeling depressed or zoned out.

Just a short film, though.

Another vote for Donnie Darko. Can't think of any others off the top of my head, but I'll add them if I do.

I am not good with movies, by what you're asking I strong recommend books... Specially from Isaac Asimov,
Phillip K. D[i]ck, William Gibson, Arthur C. Clarke and Frank Herbert
From Isaac Asimov, try Foundation Trilogy.
From Phillip K. D[i]ck, try Valis, The Man in the High Castle. A Scanner Darkly. The Minority Report. We can remember it for you wholesale.
From William Gibson, well try all his books Tongue ? The Sprawl trilogy: Neuromancer, Count Zero and Monalisa Overdrive. Johnny Mnemonic. Pattern Recognition.
A few movies I can remember:
Pi
Dark City
The Seventh Seal
Scenes from a marriage
Brazil
Ghost in the Shell 1995
Ghost in the Shell: Stand alone complex Season 1
Ghost in the Shell: Stand alone complex Season 2
Ghost in the shell: Innocence
Moon 2009
The Fountain
Akira
Movies directed by this man, specially the monty python movies

Mute Wrote:I have seen, and used to own Equilibrium. it is not a mindscrew, so much as it is a movie that makes you reflect upon yourself to some degrees. it touches upon emotions, and whether or not they're truly needed in a human. its a gritty world outside of the utopia, and really never got too great a reception, because of comparisons to the matrix, but it is a good movie nonetheless pending you are both interested in the genre and subject the movie falls into, and just generally enjoy the movie.

Plus, the guy who played Norman Bates and Bruce Wayne is the lead actor. better than Keanu Reaves in every way.

I did mention how it is similar to the matrix in the sense that it falls into that genre coz fiel did ask for something similar to the matrix.

Seconding Pi, Paprika (seriously, this one), all things Ghost in the Shell, Requiem for a Dream.

In Bruges is a bit of a stretch, but I bet you'd enjoy it. It closes with a decent question of ethics and "what would you do in that situation?" that brings some surprising emotional strength to the whole movie. Don't let Colin Farrell's involvement throw you off.
And this might be a slight challenge to get a hold of, but beyond a doubt you should see Don Hertzfeldt's short films "Everything Will be OK" and "I am so Proud of You"

Seen the movie twice (second time was because I finally forgot the first time...) This movie is messed up on so many levels.

Just remembered another movie as well. Its called The Nines. It literally is what a mind pineapple would be like if you could film it.

Also going with Chaos Theory (im all Ryan Reynolds tonight).
THX - 1138. I know Ive shared this one at some time somewhere here, but its a pretty awesome movie for when it was made.
