The awaited leeching debacle!
Eosian Wrote:"You're only cheating yourself" is actually considered a statement of indifference equivalent to "no skin off my nose", "not my problem", or "your loss, not mine".

If the attacks and disrespect towards each other continue I am closing this thread. You don't have to attack another poster personally to disagree with them.

I ment that in general, not necessarily the one whom i quoted, but I am sorry if it was interpreted in that way.

However your notion about "you're only cheating yourself" being an indifferent statement and thus without values I hardly agree about. If Nexon sees leeching with indifferent eyes, the statement would have made no sense at all. It's clear as vodka that in the claim "by doing A you miss out on B" lays a value that B is somehow relevant and prefered.
y0y0y0y0shi0 Wrote:You said that those who level up without even playing the game are those who are at fault. So what if you are both playing the game and leveling up, but in a different manner?

I'd consider that to be a separate issue.

And, like choosing to play a Magician in the first place, just a difference in playing style.

I don't personally see the point of leeching your own character (I play different classes because I want something different, not because I want to keep playing the same character) but if that's how you want to play, so be it. I'll kinda look down on the characters that result because (mentioned a few times in that character worth thread) they tend to do ridiculous things. But if it works for them, okay.

The only time I've leeched a character was when it was infeasible training on its own and I wanted to try out the build - lukless Assassins (due to the L7 formula only involving luk) do very very little damage. Like, 3-6 per star. 2hkoing blue snails is not fast exp at any level. Due to 25 dex, normal attacks work a little better, but again... not even enough to train.
Gah, it comes down to this: Maple, just like any other MMO, is a separate world with separate rules created by Nexon. It's not real life, it's a game, and inside a game world all you have to do is obey the rules put down by whoever runs it, that's it.

For example, in real life, stealing, scamming and murdering may be the wrong thing to do. But in EvE online it's perfectly fine because it's an intended aspect of the game and sanctioned/encouraged by the creators.

It's Nexon's game, they get to run it how they want, you don't have any say in it at all.
It's that simple, if they want to ruin all the hard work of non-leechers by allowing the crazy leech we have, they're allowed to, and there's nothing wrong with people playing the game in a way that is allowed by the creators. Just like if Nexon intentionally created a class that could level to 200 in a few hours, there would be nothing wrong with people playing that class, despite the horrible balance issues of having something like that.

Now this is a different side of the leeching discussion so those who decide to reply to this thread please keep your discussions civil and on topic.

hime Wrote:I stand in the middle. "Leeching" exists in other games. It's not an exploit of the game system. It is an essence a type of leveling. We did not intentionally put that system in MapleStory but as the content grows, many players want to experience the new content in shortest amount of time.

It is the player's choice in how they want to play the game (within the ToU of course) so I hope that all of you will be civil to those who do not choose to play the game the same way you do.

We will continue to monitor "leeching" should turn into an abusive behavior.

Thank you.
Even with the nerfed system, it won't stop people from leeching. In MSEA many lazy pineappleers still leech despite receiving only a tiny portion of EXP.

What I'm trying to say is that leeching can never be abolished.
bio9205 Wrote:What I'm trying to say is that leeching can never be abolished.

Of course it can, just disable party exp sharing (5% exp bonus per party member in map the only bonus for being in a party)

But that would make normal parties more biased toward attackers, which I guess nexon doesn't want.. and you can't exactly have it both ways. Either people can mooch exp or they can't.

I don't think there are any parties that need to leech to get good exp at any point, sure they benefit from it (low level Priests at Himes and stuff)

Even changing it so you have to hit a monster every so often to gain exp would fix leeching as it stands. And without affecting Priests, either - so long as they're actually attacking, not acting as HS mules.
Stereo Wrote:Of course it can, just disable party exp sharing (5% exp bonus per party member in map the only bonus for being in a party).

Actually all they'd have to do is make it so an idle time beyond 5 seconds cuts off sharing, so any party member who stops moving around drops out of the split.

People who care will just create a macro that walks back and forth across a safe platform. Takes like 5 seconds to whip up.
So bot detector them, ban them, bam. No more leechers.

Leeching isn't abusive? What about how it screwed up the rankings? Or how about the way it screws up training maps? (Galloperas for instance.) I haven't played MS lately, but I've heard Galloperas are awesome EXP, yet the maps are being wasted with Bishops selling leech, when instead they could be shared among two people who want to actually train. I'm not even going to get into how leeching has made people act with bosses. Tons of people get KSed at Bigfoot by some twat Hero with his level 40 PG mule.

Leeching is a big problem that does affect the game negatively.

Yeah I know what you are talking about. That reminded me when I was having issues with finding a clean Gallopera map when Malaysia came out to test the experience ratio there on my x-bow due to Mages selling leech, but eventually figured out the peak times that they were training. Because Mardia isn't as crowded as Scania, it isn't packed 24/7, but it is really bad at that map now because of leeching.

Not getting into any more arguments but just want to point out that this means nothing because Hime has absolutely nothing to do with MapleStory beyond acting a figurehead/scapegoat on the forums. Though it's a little surprising to see that she actually responded to a thread concerning something going on in the game, since her job is to avoid all important issues. In the bigger picture, though, her opinion is only as valid as the opinion of anyone else in this thread.

First Part: Hime's a SHE? Wow. Did not know that.

Second Part: You do know that includes you, right? Rolleyes

:f6: How did you not know that?

That somehow amuses me, deeply. Not only is she a she, she's in the halloween pictures they posted.

Really? I only saw the photos on here, so which one was she? The Tigger or the Poo?

I never go on Nexon forums, and don't pay attention to GMs' sexes.
Fumni Wrote:Really? I only saw the photos on here, so which one was she? The Tigger or the Poo?

Those were HR people.

You can find Hime pretty easily. She has a facebook profile and a blog of her own.

Tiara has her own art gallery website, blog and then some too.

Well, technically speaking when you're training with a party you are "leeching" whether or not you're contributing to the exp gain or not. I don't see anything bad with leeching, like some of us said, it's MapleStory- just a game... not a huge thing. Let people do whatever they want with their characters, it's not gonna affect you in anyway.
*What if I'm bossing and the player dies from inexperience?* <- How do youknow it wasn't a client side lag? or they were distracted by something else? Anyone can become a pro if they took about 3 hours to learn how to us it.

Last but not least, it's your story- you do whatever you want...
Player wants leech + player sells leech = haramony/happiness!
I don't see where anyone one else ccome in the equation...
Eosian Wrote:There is no hypocrisy and the situations are not even remotely similar.

With Elementals they were insisting it was working because they had an unclear understanding of the technical aspects of the feature. They were simply assuming it was working as intended because they weren't actually testing it in all scenarios. You'll note they never once stated the exact scenarios of how the damage modifier was supposed to work.

This however they stated the scenario exactly and specified that it was legal.

There is no ambiguity, there is no room for doubt or questions.

Well, I would have to disagree here.
As for Elementals, I believed gMS was the only version with the "malfunctional" version. How did you know that it's supposed to work against Bishops? How do we know that leeching is supposed never to be allowed? The thing is, we don't know. We rely on:
  1. Our senses of conscience, intuition (or subjective factors in general)
  2. Superior/absolute ruling (or factual factors)
to make assumptions we want to believe to be true.

If you don't disagree here, I'll have to ask you how there is no room for doubt or questions regarding leeching's legality when other versions, including kMS as the game's pioneer developers, define it otherwise.

It's true that our direct top-brass is Nexon America and we can't point fingers at kMS to force them to appease our whinings, but to say that leeching is perfectly okay by Nexon America's ruling is.. well, I can't find the appropriate word for this. They are dumb as pomegranate in any field beside money-making, a person with half a brain wouldn't take Hime or any of the GM's words into account when judging a universal issue in the game. Even though that fact doesn't invalidate their absolute power over us and our game, it does show their inability to address any problem with the slightest hint of intelligence and/or competence.

Someone else comes into the equation when I start getting KS'd at wind raiders because some jackass wants to leech his oh-so-hard-to-train 6x-7x.

Arguing leeching doesn't affect you, so why do you care is a terrible argument, because it does affect me. Before mini-dungeons, nearly every channel of Newties was taken up by leechers. Even trying to go to Wyverns during 2x was impossible because of all the rope-humpers. Even now with the mini-dungeons, My CB still suffers because somebody takes my map to leech.

My beef with leeching isn't the legitimacy of it, it's the effects of it that I hate. People zooming up past me in levels (Which doesn't matter but still is annoying), KSing by people who shouldn't even be training on the map, and a general mindset created in MS where training is only needed until you can leech harps, at the latest.
