Homework is to make students practice at home. The problem is teachers focus primarily on homework and tests, the tests based off the homework assignments rather than the classwork and the lectures.
That's not reasonable, though. You can't fit all the material in a course (especially more advanced courses) in ~4 hours per week of class time. The purpose of classwork is to give you enough to get you going, and provide support if you don't understand the subject matter.
Also, if you want to "make school like a job", then everything would be based on work rather than tests. People don't care how well you can retain information and spit it up, all that really matters is your work output.
Unless you're suggesting that school be extended until the evening to make room for more classwork, so you might as well be doing the same amount of work at home anyway, except the teacher has to be there for even more hours?

School is like a job without the pay, but teachers seem to be less organized and don't work as a group but feel their class is greater than any other class. It's their dormain yada yada. I remember in middle school when I was given 6 projects to do with only about 4 days to do them in, in our excelerated curricumlum at least. Do able but cmon, you really expect a 11 year old to push that hard?
Agreed, to a reasonable extent. But teachers need to get through the material, and sometimes (especially in accelerated courses - that's why they're accelerated) there is a lot of material to get through. I don't mean when everything's just "busywork" that doesn't teach or cover anything new, but sometimes it's necessary.
Also, regarding hours, you do realize that an hour is an hour right? Whether it's 7-2 (my school is 8-3) or 9-4 or 12-7, it's the same amount of time. No one said you have to stay up until x time, you can just go to bed 2 hours earlier and it's exactly the same except for how much daylight there is.
