So, I'm in this new class this semester. My teacher is interesting, to say the least. He teaches how HE wants to teach, and isn't afraid to say things that wouldn't be considered to be politically correct.
i.e.
To the only black kid in class:
"What's up home slice, those kicks look fresh."
*walks towards him like a gangsta and high fives him*
To two Asians in class:
"Which of these two looks like the better student?"
*points to one modestly dressed one, and then to one with a hat, and dyed hair* (receives no answer)
"Well, which one looks more Asian?"
To a Mexican kid in class:
"Paco, try hard on that test."
To a kid with the last name of "Beena":
"Beena, that sounds like 'beaner'."
Anyways, he teaches sociology, and brings up interesting points. He also teaches a course called 20th Century Wars (I'm in this one).
Anyways, my point is something he said today. He told us that American school is stupid. Teacher have to CONVINCE their students to read something. And if someone WANTS you to do something, then you DON'T want to do it. But what if we just PRESENTED the item. His example as a book on how to have power. A kid asked: "May I see that book?" He replied: "No." The kid then asked again because now they were curious as to why they couldn't have it. He acknowledged this and then explained to us how he thinks we shouldn't GIVE, and CONVINCE kids to do things. We should say "Here's a book on how to have power, if you want to have power then read it. IF you want to be weak then don't read it." Of course all people want power and by saying this then kids would perhaps read it.
tl;dr Do you think we should give, tell, and then convince kids to learn, or should we tell them that knowledge is at their fingertips and if they want to have it then they can read it? Which way do you think kids will learn better, and have a better attitude towards learning.

Kids will always view school the same. Giving them a choice will just mean more of them push it away and dont take it seriously. Since I actually care about myself and others, I somewhat try in school and am in the top of my class. Lazier people would just take even more advantage of this and be more lazy.

More people dislike school because it's something to rebel against than because they're lazy.
Pushing harder is only going to make them push back harder.

I only hate school because I have to wake-up early...
But actually saying stuff like, "School is retarded, Burn it down." No. I enjoy learning, it's just the morons running in it. :f6:
If anything, the American government should allow ass-whoopings in SCHOOL. That'll be the fucking best!.

This is why no one likes school.
Make the fucking 8 year olds wake up before dawn, I want to SLEEP during the school year. Telling their 8 year olds "You can stay up later when you're older" really doesn't work as well as parents think.

Since this isn't the Funhouse -
Well, what he said is essentially true; the knowledge is essentially at your fingertips and you'd obviously read it if you want to have it.
But, what you want to have and what's good for you don't entirely overlap, and some things do need to be shoved down peoples' throats for their own good.
Sometimes you just have to be forced to do something before you will, even when you know you ought to.

No, those people don't deserve the knowledge. Knowledge would be provided, and if you want to better yourself than you can take it. If you don't then screw you and don't cry when everyone else is successful (assuming we don't become socialist bastards, but that is another story).

Agreed.
You never know what you got until it's GONE. Free education is good but to a limit. I think the U.S. should have school fees and not just in Private schools or college.

Then you've got a ton of people nowhere near their (easily in reach) potential. Some people just take time to realize where they need to be.
It would make sense, if there were more second chances in life.

A country can't take the chance of stopping to produce more educated population. Having less people with a good education means less development of the country.

Your teacher is looking at things the University way I think.
"Dont want to show up to class? Dont. Dont want to read the assigned readings? Dont. Dont care? Then dont come."
What eventually happens is that those who dont give two cents about it get filtered out, and the remaining students who do care go on and learn more till they dont care anymore and join the first group, or they graduate and go onto bigger, better things.
That being said, the University is believing that the students who attend their institutions are "mature" enough to make the decisions of whether they want to do a given thing or not, and that is what separates Universities from High School; one gives their students the choice, while the other forces it onto the students.
While Im in agreement with your teacher, that forcing students to do things isnt the most effective way of learning, the alternative isnt much better: Will your typical 13 year old REALLY go and pick up Shakespeare or learn Algebra? In a perfect world, what your teacher is suggesting would work. However, in our world, it would just mean that 99.5% of the kids will not end up reading/learning whatever they'd otherwise be forced to learn and end up all just playing video games, doing drugs, chilling with friends, etc.

first point, mad points for the teacher and his knowing that being PC is counterproductive to a truly proper collegiate education.
second, if the kids desire knowledge, then nothing will stop them. but to coerce them to change who and how they are to want to learn means denying them that source and making them crave to know it, then by all means do that.

It would work if everyone were the same, but everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. In RPG terms, that power is like...giving a mage physical attack power. Like...let's say your friend is extremely good at math, and you can barely manage a D in it. You're just not as good at it, it's your weakness, and if you can barely manage a D, then at the best, you can raise your resistance to that weakness and manage a C or even a B-. (Basically, you're trying hard and you end up getting a D, your friend doesn't really try hard and gets an A.)
People want power, but there are those who want power that suits them.
Quote:Do you think we should give, tell, and then convince kids to learn, or should we tell them that knowledge is at their fingertips and if they want to have it then they can read it? Which way do you think kids will learn better, and have a better attitude towards learning.
I think there should be multiple paths available for learning, to suit the preferences of the students. (Schools supposedly place importance on students, as the reason and purpose of a school is to "educate" students, so how about focusing more on them by expanding the things done? More activities, more "caring" about the students. More ways to learn, more things to learn, more ways to be taught.) For example, most math classes are...learning by the book. That's about it. It's not really fun, and only a handful of people are good at it.
(as far as it goes, it seems like basic adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing are what some people need in life, any further and it might just not compute in their minds. I don't understand anything and close my math book after opening it . Also, it's not like you can't learn these things later, it doesn't seem to be a now or never thing, especially since after summer vacation, some classes revisit things, if you didn't understand it before, you'd have a second chance.)
It's similar to some anime, sometimes if you rewatch a show, you'll understand it better than you did the first time, making it more enjoyable.
(Math...I'd enjoy it if they had some video game based math things. Like figuring how many battles or monsters you have to fight in order to level up, RPG stuff, something along those lines, it makes it more bearable, and maybe even more fun. At least the thought of it feels fun.)
There's also maturity involved at some point in this discussion, but, it's as if teens these days have..well..become more stupid. A little too immature to think straight. "Think before you act" doesn't apply to them. If some people think a little more, they'd understand a little better. It doesn't guarantee that they'd learn something, but it helps sharpen their minds for future events, and not be a total idiot with everything. (Like on mmosite.com, there are idiots who think it's cool to constantly post "WoW Clone" on articles.)
I mean, if they see a fight, they would probably join in, rather than stopping it or ignoring it and letting a proper authority figure step in.
It's always about sex, drugs, money, cars, whatnot.
[I'm a teen myself (A "hypocrite", I may be..), and the irony is, I've learned to think straight from games. War games, Strategy games, the like. Some self-awareness came from MapleStory (at different times, 3 years ago, 2 years ago, recently this year, too.)
I guess it's because I have grown a bit from games...it's why I defend it when people slander video games...saying they are bad for you and whatnot. There are many angles to the game. Like puzzle games, solving puzzles takes thought, learning to use that thought via the puzzle game is -good-.]
As for forcing....force isn't always the best option. That's as bad as peer pressure. Either they give in, or they give up. "You have to do this or you get an F" "I've tried a thousand times and I just can't do it, give me that F because I give up." (-Personal experience- I did happen to have a phase in school where I gave up, which caused a repeating of the 8th grade, let's just say, schools don't really care about students, and I was depressed. Probably still am, but am in control of it.)
It takes time to learn, force takes away time (Do this within the next 9 days.) And with some other methods, the problem would be...we'd have a bunch of lazy idiots in this world wasting resources. They'd literally be a waste of life in that sense.
It's pretty much a double edged sword.
(I have a bad habit of stretching out posts with random stories and such, and it's now 5:34AM, nearing the usual sleeping time, so excuse me if I make any typos or type up something that doesn't make sense. I usually spend the final moments awake with posting something up somewhere, then head to bed.)

You people don't even begin to know how broken the system is. Let's look at elementary school. You are by law to attend, from 8-4pm (a job). You get homework assignments that reiterate what you learned in class. Now this is where it gets broken. Homework is nearly 35% of your grade period. This goes through honestly high school. If you don't know how to do it in class most likely you won't be able to do it at home especially when the 'example' is like 2+2=4 and the problem you are trying to solve has fractions with curly q's and banana peel rammed up the equal signs ass.
I don't know about other schools but here we have to be in class at 7:17 sitting on our asses. Late? Detention, Late again? Suspension. This is a public school and believe me they stick to it. You get 4 blocks, each about 90 minutes long of unbearable monkey classwork. Then you go home with about 3 hours of total homework (Not like you need a nap when you get out of that mind numbing prison or anything) just to repeat the next day with the Group B cycle of teachers.
The teachers are underpaid, overworked and really see's most kids as someone whos going to cause trouble. See what they teach in teachers school(LOL) is that if a kid misses an assignment, messes up a test, or what have you, theres no room for negotiating, you werent prepared you fail, thus life has the same concept. Well, being out of school for about a year with a state job I can say it is not the same. They give you this false sense of "end of the world" if you don't fullfill your obligations, which honestly sometimes you have to cut thigns to make up others.
Also I'm paying for a frekin class to learn, not get a teachers opinion, a book slammed in my face to teach myself the other 75% of the lesson. You want to know something pineappled up? My father can't use me as a tax break for being a dependent with low income yet the government can use his income against me for student loans/grants. Not only that but you're asking for a 5k loan and end up paying 10k back off. It's a two tier system, you either got it or you don't. Oh you want to have a decent education so you can progress farther in life? Oh that doesn't matter; do you have the money to pay or not.
The school system needs a revamp, end of story. That's just in annapolis maryland though, I don't know about other states.

PG Wrote:The best teachers I remember from school had three things in common:
(1) They had high standards. Like three year olds testing their parents, students will test teachers to see if they can get away with low-quality work or bad behavior. They won't respect the teachers who don't call them on it.
(2) They liked us. Like dogs, kids can tell very accurately whether or not someone wishes them well. I think a lot of our teachers either never liked kids much, or got burned out and started not to like them. It's hard to be a good teacher once that happens. I can't think of one teacher in all the schools I went to who managed to be good despite disliking students.
(3) They were interested in the subject. Most of the public school teachers I had weren't really interested in what they taught. Enthusiasm is contagious, and so is boredom.
That is the key. Good teachers. Your teacher seem like a good teacher in a way.

I think he is just not being a pansy. He treats us like adults, and isn't afraid to be a teacher. He's in control of his classroom, not the kids. respect is the key.

Appears to me that you don't know how to work the system. I love to learn. I do learn.
About homework, come on. I don't know how no one ever realizes you DON'T HAVE TO DO IT TILL HIGH SCHOOL. Seriously, it is impossible to fail (unless your parents agree to hold you back) before high school (at least in California).

I'd agree. He talks to us about humans, and the human psyche. He is also explaining to us parts of Sun Tzu's The Art of War.

In my opinion As an older person, I do say you do need school in your lives, cause otherwise you wouldnt all be able to speak write or spell, and who knows if maple decides to give iq tests to play to make the gms stop stupidity in the game. But in my opinion you all or sum maybe lazy but you all need to apply yourselves. People who drop out are losers, that should of tried for a decent education, and its free when you go to public schools, but they might be sorry when they don't get to have that opportunity again. That's Just my opinion on it.
