Devil's Sunrise Wrote:I've scribbled down something about Zakum and the mythology behind; it refers mostly to Aztec, Inca and Maya-culture and stories. Zakum's fruit and residence (Hell) is due to the Zaqqum, yes. But Zakum's tale is somewhat similar to the tale of Zipacna, and explains why Zakum's made out of stone. A lot of different other statues made of other gods (Even a Christian statue, but apart from that, all Aztec/Maya) combined looks like Zakum.
I've grown an apetite for the crusader-skill and dragon knight skills. They have certainly interesting magic circles, where I've found two of them (They are completely similar, there's no mistake). Looking for the double-ouroboros from Dragon Knight's collection at the current moment, or at least trying to find out what the text refers to.
(I'll post the circles later, when I'm on my ubuntu-account)
Actually, Zakum summons are related to Mayas and Incas. Ono of them is called Cuzco, an obvious wink to that.

This guy is not a true canadian and clearly does not represent us.
Truthfully, we all live in igloos. It's not always snowy but it's cold, eh? We use insulated ethernet wires and buy service from American providers for three times what it's worth 'cause we're just that nice. Our jobs mostly consist of cutting down maple trees and then sucking the syrup out of 'em. They go great with maple leaves, but since it's so cold you'll rarely find one (a leaf, that is.)
If you venture deep into a cities epicenter (middle of the forest) you will hear the mating call of the Canadian. "Eh. EH? Eh."

This is the uncensored truth about Canadians.

I'm sorry but I think it's time that those living under their protective blanket of red white and blue learn the cold snowy truth about their happy northern neighbours. Eh.
Leviathan means whale in hebrew [pronounced Leviatan] Ariant is all based on Arabic stories. El Nido, California Nautilus Submarine. Ereb, or Erebus, the god of Darkness.
"place of darkness between earth and Hades. Erebh means sunset, or evening". Maybe from here they got the Dawn Warrior.

Just a few comments on this... :f6:
Leviathan does mean whale in modern Hebrew, but in ancient Hebrew it refered to any large sea animal, and in particular a large sea monster that Yahweh defeated in the bible. Follow the etymology here.
Scherezade was Persian, not arabic. And the Farsi language is not related to Arabic, although Hebrew is.
Nido is spanish for nest, so "el nido" is "the nest."
Nautilus comes from greek meaning sailor, not submarine. It was the fictional submarine in Jules Verne's 20,000 leagues under the sea that was named after this.
Ereb is still throwing me for a loop, though. Anyone want to take up the etymology on this?

Kerning... the process of adjusting letter spacing in a proportional font.
From what i was told by korean players, the name of the city is more like "Kanning" in Korean, and that's a term that refers to cheating (especially on a test) so it's more likely referring to the "illegal" nature of the town and Thieves in a way that the target audience (students) could easily relate.

This Ereb is WAYYYYYYYYY off. It's pretty much the antithesis of Maple's Ereb.

Yeah I just gave examples of existing things from the game.
Scherezade, aka Shahrazad, is famous for the story One thousand Nights and One Night ['alf layla wa-layla in Arabic] it's a collection of folk tales and other stories. It is often known in English as the Arabian Nights. The tales themselves trace their roots back to ancient and medieval Arabic, Persian, Indian, Egyptian and Mesopotamian folklore and literature. As you can see, many of the Ariants quests are taken from the stories of the book, such as Ali Baba, Shahrazad's story herself [Being hold captive by the king in order to tell him stories every day]
To isaac-
Well I kinda found the connection of the Black Magician to this [Erebus - a dark evil god. The Black Magician isn't a god but well, you can see the connection]. Since Ereb and Knights of Cygnus themselves are all build around The Black Magician, Ereb[h] could symbol the "Sunset" of the Black Magician, or in other words, his defeat[?]. And that's why, it's called Ereb.

Ereb is a name of countless towns in Azerbaijan. Anywho, I'm astounded at a discovery I made. Who knew astronomical lessons on constellations ans stars meanings could be so useful to Maple Story. I'm pretty sure you all know of the level 100 crossbow, the neschere. Well as I was looking into information about a particular constellation, I came across this : The constellation of Aquila was known to the Hebrews as Neshr meaning eagle, falcon, vulture. At first I'm like hmm, that name sounds very familiar. Then it came to me and I was like whoa. The neschere itself looks like an eagle. And on another note while Altair may be the name of a star, the Arabs knew Aquila as Altair.
Edit: Adding some extra info, Nihal is the name of a tribe in Central India. And I believe Minar to be shortened from Minaret, but that would make no sense whatsoever, because Leafre does not have an Arabic feel to it.

I read the book (as did Disney when they made Aladdin ), and in the wikipedia link you provided, it already shows what I am aware of, that the stories came from Persia before it adopted Islam.
It was called Arabian Nights when it made the migration from east to west via Arab merchants and sufi mystics, much like how we call the symbols "0123456789" Arabic numerals, even though they were invented in and originated from India.
Hugin and Munin of the Pink Bean boss battle are both ravens assosciated with the Norse god Odin. Apparently, they travel the world bearing news collected from Odin. You're probably thinking how does this tie in with the Temple of Time. Here's where it gets more interesting. Hugin is supposed to represent thought while Munin represents memory. Korea manages to tie everything in again.
Did some research, got ninjaed by the Huigin/ Munin thing.
There are lots of references off the top of my head. New Leaf City, Yetinx, Affluent Tower, Haunted House, Korean Folk Town, Romeo and Juliet, the Pixies, Boogies, the Balrogs, Gryphons/Typhons, Stirgeman, half the things in Leafre... yeah.
Gumiho: The Nine-Tailed Fox, whether Naruto, Pokemon (Ninetales), or the Kyubi of Chinese legend. Samiho, Three-Tailed Fox, is in Pokemon as well (Vulpix).

I'm not going to be very nice, but research isn't just googling some random thing. Subani refers to Anubis, which is the God of afterlife or something around those lines. Naricain also refers to something in the same way if I recall correctly. Ask Isaac for it.
