The Content Testing (Tespia) Clarification
#41
The question is, would Nexon really bother to fix the glitches if they continued the test server?

Imagine if people actually reported glitches, instead of submitting stupid questions; we might be able to kill Latanica! -_-;

What the hell were they expecting when they selected random people? Actual results?

Even if they culled everyone but the top 20 of the bug finders they would have done a great job. Nexon should have kept it open just for them, god knows Nexon could do with some competent testers.

and that is why you do NOT randomally select people if you actually want them to bring profit, nexon.

Geez. The first thing that I see on one of the few times i sneak on is this. Seriously, though. I didn't think people were that stupid.

"OMG. I got selected." -8 year old.
"How do I become GM?" Stupid 7 year old who uses grammar check.
"fix it" -Complete and utter spoiled douchebag who skips school and registered 351372598071 accounts.
"My ticket didn't get answered." -Basiler.

NEXON is even smarter than this. Also...

"So, for every useful bug that we did get, we'd get around 40-50 bugs like above. So, we looked into it more, and found that only a handful of people were actually testing."

Then let those few people who were actually testing go into the next term. Sheesh. Don't let the whole wave go into the server again.

NxJoe didn't explain anything about actually fixing those reported and legitimate bugs, either. Ha.

I also find it quite strange that everyone is getting so defensive about their glitch count. We know you're not a stupid idiotic 8-year old who contributed to the closing of Tespia.

Another thing to note (I'm actually surprised no one noticed this yet): "It takes manpower to maintain essentially 2 servers every test period."

Hmm. 2 servers. That means each channel is actually one server, contrary to the popular belief (I think) that every server holds two channels. I also find it kind of hilarious that the "Null" channel is acknowledged here. Heh. Funny since it actually is a server, but not displayed in the main menu...

I could really care less about it reopening in the future, having personally quit for good, but for the sake of Combattente and other folks, I hope ya'll make it into Tespia (get the reference?).

I find it funny that everyone is saying NXJoeW when it was really prose who said it.

I'm pretty sure 2 channels =/= 2 servers. That means at least 100+ servers for every world we have. O____o

I think by 2 servers he meant the server that the players test on, and the server that nexon tests on, since their testing involves almost constant changes to their code and thus, almost constant server downtime. They can't test on the official servers and they can't test on the official test server. Thus, 2 servers.

Oops. Wasn't reading properly at the NXJoeW part, heh.

Even though you draw a good hypothesis, it's really too vague. Does he really expect us to catch that Nexon GMs have a server too? (I know they do, but to the common player they don't know that fact...). He would have a mentioned it.

Plus, going by your hypothesis, that also means that we would have items fixed, and that's a huge negative. Let's look at the third term.

-DCDCDCDCDC...for four days. Fifth day...we all yell at -Hime-

"THE TEST SERVER IS DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!"

"No..."

"YES YOU %*&(%^*&(^87!"

"Oh...erm....I'll go check."

We get it fixed one day later.

Assuming that Nexon has maintained their private test server, then they would have noticed the DC glitch...and you can see it never got fixed until we all yelled at -Hime-.

Good point, but who says the cheap-o server they got for the public is actually suitable for it's use? Their private one, along with the official one, are probably both top of the line (they wouldn't get a cheap ass server for their testing purposes, and i'm sure we agree the official server is the best money can buy). The official test server could easily be not be as powerful as it should have been, since they only have to use it for a week or two and only for a few thousand players.

Plus, i think there are bugs that exist that can break the server. So something someone did could have triggered it and the devs would have never caught it on their server.

I'm not quite sure if the GMS official server is the "best money can buy"...I keep on hearing people snigger comments about how it's down on the time, etc.

The private GM testing server has like, what, 10 testers? I'm judging that since there's only 3 people that they're looking for...and the official public test server has 3,000 people...yeah...I don't see why you would waste a bunch of money on 10 testers....even if it's permanent....

If you're saying that the players broke down the server, then what about the Extra D glitch in Showa? I swear, it might be near impossible not to trigger that...

You also didn't respond to this point D=.

Oh, and I have to go now...been sneaking on too long.

No doubt it's some of the best. For a server being able to be constantly connecting to tens of thousands of places around the continent 24/7 and going down for maintenance once a week is a pretty damn impressive feat from what i've seen so far.

I dunno, i guess they think that wasting a ton of money on people who actually test is better than people who'll take advantage of the custom modifications to their code and just have fun for a week, spamming them with "FIX IT NAO" tickets. It is nexon after all, but it's still just my theory. xD

Extra D glitch was the missing frames right? I'm not really familiar with that one. Eek

Missed that one. :[

It might be too vague, but it's still really possible. I mean, they DO say that they have to test "exclusive content" so it meshes with the game. They didn't have tespia open when they put that there either, which just leads me to believe they're testing on their private server.

Bai. :/

Ewww.. I really hope that you will come back, sooner or later, maybe for Tespia, if it will ever open again (undoubtedly). I kinda quitted, too. I'm really busy and I don't have time to play MapleStory anymore.. but I still have some time to check forums.. and I rarely ever log in on Maple. D:

Anyway, I agree with all your points.

Maybe if they didn't take the half-assed approach of a poorly designed test server, this wouldn't have been a problem. Clearly, Nexon underestimated the power of idiots. D:

I'm pretty sure he means running 2 public servers (Tespia and Global)

Both of them need GMs, maintenance (so they don't kick everybody out like tespia did for 3-4 days in one of the test periods) and other stuff.

Actual number of hardware is kinda irrelevant, what with virtual machines and stuff. Look at private servers, they almost all ran on a single server, with the exception of the big ones like odin (3 servers afaik, running login + 13 channels)

Heh, I'm pretty sure Tespia didn't have GMs and it was monitored very little.

Global's GMs aren't enough already, I don't think they'd have more of them for Tespia.

I highly doubt that GMS is run on just a few servers. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a single server dedicated to chn 1 of each world. I know that in EVE, whenever a large (player-driven) corporate battle ensues, the server maintaining that particular patch of space starts to l4g so much to the point that the GMs try to break up the crowd, or else the server will crash.

In regards to the original topic, I'm literally face-palming at Nexon's blunders. It's a lot like hiring people for a job. You don't choose someone with little experience or maturity. Nexon failed to find experienced participants for the 2nd and 3rd wave Tespia (no seniority), and they absolutely failed to ensure that the participants actually study and pay attention to what they do. This is partly verfyable by imposing a random general knowledge test about the Maple World, a lot like the test at the Holy Rock, only the ones for Tespia expire after a few days or so (to prevent generation of answer sheets).

I approve of KMST's methods, but since that came up, I'm a bit skeptical as to whether GMST is required for anything if Nexon America just gets carbon copies of the data/code (aside from version-exclusive content of course).

well, I can't blame them for doing that (taking Tespia down) I was hoping it was going to stay,
Well it's good to at lest know "WHY" it was taken down

~Though, I do wish I wasn't so in hast to make so many future Tespia sigs Tongue ~

you people should be defending the noobs who spammed nexon.

sometimes i wonder about this community and its relationship with nexon. they failed on every level with this "test server" (they marketed it as a contest/event and got what they deserved). yet months down the line when active members pressure them as to why the test server never came back, they pin it back on the people they selected to be test clients.

this is nexons fault, its failure, if it was truly meant to be a test server and not some event; its nexons failure as a game operator. blaming it later on the community is a scapegoat and a tasteless reply at best. you dont come back and blame your consumers for your failure (even if it was a product of the end users this is extremely tacky for any company of any size to do).

why am i surprised though, who knows, their customer service is hideous.
