What is the difference between hot sauce and salsa?

salsa is a way of dancing.

Salsa is spanish for "sauce" so it can be anything, not just hot sauce. i.e. "salsa de tomate" means "tomato sauce" (or ketchup if you're weird).

Salsa is used more for homemade sauces.

Hot Sauce is used for the bottled version.

All the salsa i've had (like the Dorito's salsa dip) is more tangy tomato and chunky, while Hot Sauce is more spicy and smooth.

In America at least, if you ask for salsa, there is a CLEAR EXPECTATION of receiving a spicy tomato-based sauce, often including ingredients such as onions, peppers, and cilantro. Salsa is typically used as a dip. If you ask for hot sauce, you expect to receive a sauce made from chili peppers, salt, and vinegar. Hot sauce is typically eaten with meats.
