Basically what Polantaris said. He's in the dual Arzuros quest in G1* (Port 6*), and is always in it as a Gold Crown Large Arzuros.
He has an attack boost and him being so big makes his hitboxes really wonky, but he still has the same HP as a normal Arzuros (read as: still dies in about five minutes even with High Rank weapons).

I see. So, how far are you in the game?

I'm HR8x, and have unlocked everything except for two 8* quests, which is done at HR90 and HR100.

In Moga, I've unlocked and beaten Deviljho, however I've been lazy completing the last few quests to unlock Mark of the Hero.

I have like 250 hours or so? I've been playing a lot online with some friends and just making gear, really. Not really in a rush to do anything in particular, just enjoying the game.

I wrote up that Bow guide because I run into Kelbi Spammers so much it's not even funny. They just sit there and spam First Charge shots, doing absolutely nothing right with Bows and it's disgusting. They use it only because some people made some videos showing it to be powerful, and not because they enjoy the weapon or even know how to use it. Just yesterday I had someone doing it on Jhen, and they were so far back that they didn't even hit them half the time...and they just sat there spamming...it was terrible.

God, how many HRs are there in this game!? I'm only on HR5 now!

I too finished all my quests except Mark of the Hero because I die in two hits by the Ivory Lagi, and seeing that Brach is next, I'm not gonna bother. I may have to wait a while so I'm gonna do my HR quests. What armor choices should I look towards too?

Right now, I done at least a week's time in the game.

The ranking system changes up when you hit HR8. Between HR1-7, it works like the normal Portable games, where you do quests, unlock an urgent, and do it to rank up. Once you beat Dire Miralis for the 8* urgent, the HR system turns into how it is in the non portable games like Tri and Frontier, where you get Hunter Rank Points by doing quests and rank up based on how many points you have. The max HR is 999, but you finish unlocking things at HR100, and you unlock all the monsters by HR70. No worries about doing a lot of quests before you unlock this change in HR, because the game is secretly keeping track of all your HRP gained, it just doesn't tell you. When you beat Dire Miralis, you will receive a giant HR boost. Personally, I went straight to HR34, if I remember correctly, from HR7.

G Rank changes the playing field a lot. The monsters start hitting like trucks, which is why Mark of the Hero is giving you issues. It's also when all the new armor skills (and some old ones) show up, it really is the bulk of the game. Skills like Awaken, Sharpness+1, Wrath Awoken, Honed Blade, Silver Bullets, and several others are only available in G Rank. They really didn't put a lot of effort into changing up the game from Tri aside from new monsters before G Rank. Low Rank Moga is almost exactly the same, with some exceptions (Like the Kayamba stuff, and a few new monsters). Nothing gets new moves that they never had before until G Rank either. You don't really notice these things unless you've played Tri or P3rd before.

Does this effect work for HR 4-5, because I'm noticing that monsters are living longer than expected.

Basically, a monster's health is determined by the quest you're doing, and as you go into higher quests they do get more health.

A monster in a regular hunt quest in 4* will have less health than the same species of monster in a regular hunt quest in 5*. Not by a too awful much, but the difference is still there.

Another thing to know is that subspecies naturally have higher health than their regular counterparts, but are generally (but not always) more susceptible to status afflictions, namely poison.

Ok, I've been using a Slime SnS and DBs and I'm thinking of giving Abnormal Effects a try. What are good choices?

Jhen Mohran proved I really need to upgrade my armor. G.Jaggi ain't cuttin' it no more. What's some good HR GS sets that last decently into Grank?

Paralyze is pure awesome, in my opinion, but Capcom has tried their very hardest to make it impossible to deal damage and also use Paralyze with. The Gobul SnS isn't too bad, but all the Duals with Paralyze naturally suck.

There's some decent Poison weapons, but I haven't really investigated them all that much. There's weapon Trees here: http://www.kiranico.com/weapon/ although they don't show Rank Limitations (one reason I like the JP wiki better). If anything needs a Shard, Cortex, or Hvy anything, it's G Rank so you can't get it until you unlock G Rank.

Jhen is only Moga at High Rank or Tanzia at G Rank. Considering his post I must think he means High Rank.

As for sets to get...I never really looked into sets for GS, however Focus(FastCharge) is definitely a great skill for GS, so I think anything with it is worth considering.

There's a Jhen quest at HR 5 High Rank.

High Rank village to be exact. I can repel him easily, but I'm like THIS CLOSE to killing him. I break one of his arms before the final showdown, and his horns break from a few ballista shots.

There is...huh...I don't remember doing it at all, to be honest(I have done it).

Eat for Felyne Bombardier, which I believe is the third cooking option with Meat + Dairy. It really helps out. Don't really bother with the Ballista shots too much until you run out of Cannon shots in the first Phase. Use the Ballista shots you have from the box on the horns, and then just spam Cannons when he's in range after you've broken both fin/back parts. When he tries to stab the boat, use the Ballista Binder to stop him, and drop an Anti-Dragon Bomb on each tusk when you can jump on to them. Combined with some Ballista Shots early on in Phase 2 when the Cannons cannot reach him, you should easily break both tusks. If they aren't by the time he gets close, a few well placed Cannon shots will break them.

In Phase 1, when he comes out of the sand and does the bloated stomach attack, you can hit the Hunting Gong to cancel him. In Phase 2, Gonging the same attack will knock him over and allow you to attack his mouth, which is his primary weakspot. Make sure you have HP when you do that though, because when he gets up you will get tossed for a lot.

You can save yourself from damage while on his back by jumping off of it early when he starts to shift his weight a lot, that means he's about to toss you off. If you're fast enough, you can even jump right back on to the boat without having to deal with getting back on the hard way.

When both tusks are broken in the second stage, you can go for his arms to break them with your weapon, however if you're worried about damage it might be best to spam Cannon shots until you run out first.

Weelp, kilt him twice once I started using bombadier. Still a 27-28 minute kill, however. Just glad I can kill him reliably now. Also,

>Looking for Focus armor in HR, ain't pomegranate shows up
>Finally beat Jhen, look at his armor as per tradition

The ironing.

They have a knack of putting the skills you want on armor that's really annoying to grind. Ceadeus armor in Tri was OP as hell as well.

Also congratulations!

Can anyone remind me how bad ol' Goldbeard is? Will I need a party to down him? Will my Dios set be good enough?
