Alcohol not bad for you?
#41
Everything is bad without measure. EVERTHING

You can have even a WATER OVERDOSE. The tricky part is that some stuff is worse at bigger quantities.

Examples:
-Water is needed for life, so you can have a lot.
-Alcohol can produce several health diseases... Only in excess. Without excess, it's only a bit of fun, and a way to have your kidneys exercised. Making it a habit is the worst thing you could do. And by habit I mean, drink for the heck of it. Don't feel like drinking? then don't
-Small and very controlled ammounts of particular poisons can make you immune against them. Even our hair stores arsenic, wich can be deadly.
-There's a poison that can kill a horse with a dose of 9 mg in blood. And the name's... nicotine.

Most of the deadliest stuff is deadly simply because the body can't take it out, and as long as it keeps staying it... You'd end up with an "overdose". Alcohol is filtered... Nicotine isn't, for example.

This is true. When I was living in Spain(about 4 years), I used to stay at my mom's friend house until we got our own home, and everyday at dinner, there would be a bottle of Red wine on the table, they drink about 1-2 glasses a day.

Alloy can probably support this statement since he lives in the area I used to live.

That's quite normal here (Well, depends on the people. I myself prefer water at dinner). Our drinking age is quite low, actually. Also, a bit of wine everyday is actually great for your health.

If you really think about it, Alcohol is only bad if drinking it becomes a problem. Like, Sure if you go out and have a good time a few times a month, what's that going to do? But it's when you start to binge drink and become addicted is when it really becomes a health issue. Also, all of our bodies are different, that plays into effect as well. Some won't take alcohol as well as others.

I just started drinking like, 2 months ago. I'm 16. My friends usually have a party once every 3 weeks. To me, it hasn't become a problem and I'm having a hell of a good time. Even though I am 16, I'm responsible to know when to stop, and how to control myself even if I am, drunk.

Responsibility and moderation is key. :O

In the weekends, I ate some liquor candy (they didn't make me high, I felt nothing after I ate it, and so I ate 10 and then still nothing happened...) Today I had a math test in 2nd period. I studied during first period, and I noticed I forgot everything, and I felt kinda stupid in a way. I'm not sure what's the cause, maybe it's me not doing advanced function for 4 days straight. or maybe it's me getting less than 6 hours of sleep in the past 5 days, or maybe it's the liquor. Anyways, I asked a friend on how to do everything (he's kinda surprised cause it's usually him asking me) After I figured out everything, 2nd period started.

I know for sure I did all the questions right except for the last one. I don't know why, but I can't think for some reason. The last question is usually a thinking question that needs you to think, because you never learned how to solve it. the last question worth 4 marks. and I did as much as I could, I think i'll get at least 2 marks. At lunch my friend showed me how he solved it. Everything is similiar to my step, except for the last part where i'm stuck. a part of the equation is 3* x log 2. and that's the part that I got stuck. He just rewrote that part as xlog2+xlog2+xlog2 and then he solved it. I was like wow, i never thought of that...

I wonder if this is because of me eating the liquor candy or my own stupidity.

Anyways I might try my hand on a real drink soon. My parents obviously won't let me drink, so it's hard for me to get it...

btw after I ate the liquor candy, I solved 4 questions on projecteuler.net in less than 1 hour, I don't know if that's related or I was just bored at that time...

summary it might have made me stupid, or might have made me smart, can't determine right now...

Nonetheless, everythign is okay in moderation, but everything has a different moderation.

problem with alchohol is it can become addicting to some people (and juts because you didn't get easily addicted doesn't mean someone else won't, it has to do a lot with genetics), so you go overboard without control.

Horusmaster, wow. I think that pretty much everyone in this thread agrees that ALCHOHOL DOES NOT MAKE YOU SMARTER. You can do it for a little buzz now and then, or drink some red wine to help out with your heart. But drinking a beer will NOT make you smarter.

Half my cousins are above the drinking age, and when we went to a beachhouse for vacation the 10 heavy drinkers could go through two big packs of cheap beer a night. And the night where they got the most hammered, one of my cousins fell asleep on the couch in a wet wetsuit, because he decided to go into the ocean at 3 in the morning.

Now then, who thinks that was very smart of him?

yea, I know it doesn't directly make a person smarter.

the reason that it makes my friend "smarter" is probably because it's used to relieve stress or sth, but no use for me since i don't get stressed easily.

but what i'm trying to find out now is that does it make you dumber... I don't really care about health or anything. I'm a already a second-handed smoker (my entire school is surrounded by smokers, it is not allowed to smoke within school property, but surrounding the edge of the school property are all smokers...)

just wanna try it... it's not like doing drugs...
so far i felt nothing from that 250ml drink >.>

From what I've seen, and what I've learned in school, and what I've experienced (I drink sometimes), alcohol does WHAT YOU EXPECT IT TO DO to you. If you think alcohol makes you into a raving fool/ a fun person/ an emotional trainwreck, it will. Or you'll just be funny. Some people act dumber; some people can act like themselves when their drunk. It really affects people differently. What you find won't be a universal answer.
Also, it takes different amounts for each person to get intoxicated. I have a fairly low tolerance; I also don't like alcohol. Wine in moderation may be good, but I'm pretty sick of watching people turn into bumbling fools over the stuff. -_- Seriously. If you're that curious, drink, but please try to control yourself. You'll be doing the world a favor.

Anything is bad in large quantities. My aunt is an expert on alcohol and drugs, as she teaches advanced health classes. I believe she said alcohol is good for you unless taken in large quantities. So, just don't go overboard.

o_O@this thread and some of it's replies...

Hi, I'm 17 years old, and I drink every weekend, extremely heavily, it comes with a social life (not saying you guys don't have any). However at age 17 and not knowing what exactly goes on at parties must mean you have a sheltered life or are extremely oblivious/ignorant. I can guarantee you that if you ask people if they drink of have drank before, most will say yes. Drinking isn't bad unless you take it to an extreme and get wasted every day and continue to do so for the rest of your life. Other wise, just take a shot! Being drunk is fun , don't go into "research" about drinking or anything of the sort lol, just try different drinks and see what's most fun for you and your friends.
There's nothing like a friday night with tons of people and tables of beer pong all around =]. Just live life in the moment while you're young, other wise you wont get away with doing this stuff when you're older :x.

Alcohol is a depressent & that's why you get that "drunk" feeling & then you get sleepy. Drinking is bad, if you do it A LOT (on a everyday basis)It fvcks up your liver & your brain. Are we discussing beer? b/c i see A LOT of beer replies( I don't see Beer as being pure alcohol b/c it just doesn't seem as an alcoholic beverage to me b/c of the % level)..Now Jack Daniels, Vodka, Bacardi(NOW THAT'S alcohol) I hope if you guys do drink, DON'T drive or do some stupid pomegranate like try to olympic dive off the board into a empty pool.. even if it is 2 or 3 beers

So you're saying you drink because it gives you friends who also drink?

Even if drinking is fun, I'd rather be nice to my brain and liver and not get trashed every weekend >_>

Drinking 250 mL of beer isn't enough to get you drunk. Depending on body weight and size, you'll need at least 4 - 6 of the 12 oz. beers to get you drunk. This is why I prefer harder spirits. You don't need to drink as much, and generally it leaves you with less aftertaste and hangover. I'm one of those guys that dislikes beer to get drunk. I don't see the point in it when it has such low ABV. If you want to get drunk or feel drunk, drink harder liquor.

tl;dr: Yes, as said above it's good in moderation. If you want the tl;dr keep reading.

Drinking a glass of red wine occasionally is recommended by doctors as good for the heart. Drinking occasionally will relieve stress. At one point, when I had a stressful period, at the end I'd have a few shots, and it would mellow me out and I was much less stressed out. Pretty much what you feel from a vacation.

Overly drunken sex is pomegranate, but if you have some wine before doing it, it's much better. I am speaking of a healthy relationship here. The issue with drunken sex is that alcohol in excess may cause you to make reckless decisions, such as sleeping with a stranger at the bar. Waking up next to a woman (or man) whom you would find absolutely repulsive while sober is never a good feeling. You can put yourself at risk for rape, murder, robbery, or kidnapping. And more than a few people get their genital herpes/syphilis/AIDS from such encounters.

As far as the long-term effects of alcoholism, they're pronounced. I worked at a clinic where one patient died at 35. The doctor said it was too bad, but he drank and smoked, so she wasn't surprised. Alcohol impairs relationships (drunks beating their wives and kids, health declining,) and work performance. Alcohol also COSTS MONEY. If you're buying beer every day, that's a lot of money down the toilet.

As far as people saying that American society is the most decadent and hedonistic as any culture has ever been.... no. Just no. In feudal Japan a drunken samurai could kill a commoner with no repercussions. And there's also good old ancient Greece, where priestesses led massive drunken orgies in praise to their pagan gods. I am fairly sure more STDs got passed around those than in our condom-carrying society.

Ape, not everyone cares for partying and doing random pomegranate for the heck of it. I know that I don't, and I'm not the only one. Hell, in general, the average human irritates me. No respect at all and they just mess around. What will become of their lives? Who knows. I guarantee that most people who end up inventing stuff and improving our lives with technology aren't going out and partying every weekend. :/

I have no interest in alcohol. It is probably partially from the school shelter and partially because I never saw the point in it. I don't care for socializing - either I have something to talk about with people or I don't.

Either way, horus, just be responsible and use common sense about it. Don't go driving around after you've had a few, don't do illegal stuff, don't have enough to pass out - you get the idea. Confused

getting high might give me a new way of thinking.

That's called state-dependent memory - things learned in one state of mind are more easily remembered in that same state.
