I was a bit disappointed when I found that they weren't required to forge Crimsonwood/Raven weapons. : ( In this scenario you can always save the steel plates for Maker. However i'm talking more specifically about things that are released in other versions, where we can *Know* for a fact what will be needed. Masteria expansions are always going to be a dice roll for us.

At least I made like 120m by selling Phantom Seeds the first couple of weeks. Easiest mesos I've ever made.
That's another way I make money, get quest stuff for recently released quests. But first, I do the quests as soon and fast as possible, to see what type of reward I get.

Find something that you can train on without spending a lot on potions and have at it.
Save for 2x drop in MTS, then repeat above (ONLY at a place where you can make back the 2x drop card AND profit. 1 Month cards are more money efficient for those patient enough to save for them.
Make new characters (using the same sets of equipment as for previously made characters [this gets cheaper after the first 1 or 2 characters] and farm low level (30-40 are especially good) scroll quests. Characters can also be used as CPQ mules, and can double as item mules.

MTS items, win contests, buy NX... It all works it's way around. The only way isn't merching. Like in Scania I just scrolled 2 shields and one ended up 9/18 magic attack, that's profit right there. =)

Honestly, I have no clue how I get money. It just comes. I don't use NX for mesos, nor do I merchant, ever.
I just train, and after a few months I"ll notice a nice stockpile of mesos in the bank, then I'll upgrade an equip, sell the old one, and have a little foothold to keep on training.
Sometimes I'll find equips, other times it'll be on a mule. Really, I don't know what happens, but I do know that through just training and selling I've gotten all my equips slightly above average =P

This. I made 20 mill back when 3rd job came out (back when 20 mill was a lot) by hoarding Dark Crystals and again with 4th job and Eos scrolls.
Im not married, but Im able to make money through MTSing/various other methods, namely area boss hunting and MTSing the scrolls/etc. pieces that they drop.

Bossing is my main source of monies. Events are usually pretty delicious, too. That hilarious gach box event was awesome. I made hundreds of mil just selling the gold chests. I didn't have to spend a dime on NX.
I can APQ on two characters easily, but I rarely do anymore.

Now that I think about it, would getting items and selling them after a patch fall under the category of merchanting..?

I was quite poor until past level 100.
Then when CW was released, I went to typhons and made a crazy amount of mesos in less than a week. I decided that APQ was my best bet for making more mesos, so converted all the mesos into NX using summoning rocks and a few scrolls towards the end.
Now I rely on bossing/ APQ. I never break even training
I have never bought NX

i usually took advantage of events before i learned about merching, when i learned about the first wish ticket event, i got my friend to lend me 1m, i bought 1000 tickets for 1k ea, and resold for 12k ea = free 12m.

I always leave the option of event items. Sometimes the return is very minimal (White Roses) or sometimes its huge (Maple Shields). About a month ago, you could probably sell Maplemas lights for a lot more then what they're about to become (assuming they are released again).

Revealing my methods would completely ruin the effectiveness of them >.>
Then again, im not that rich, so it probably wouldnt help that much.
I used to merchant, but then people put out guides on merchanting and everything, and now EVERYONE merchants, the profit margins with it are way smaller now. best way to make cash is to blow all your cash on scrolls and equips (probably claws) and hope something godly comes out of it.

IGN: I don't play MS
I manage by not spending much. Most of my equipment has always been clean. My characters usually have a ZHelm, a decent weapon and glove, a decent cape, and an overall with 1-2 10%s and a lot of 100%s. I have Deputy Stars on my characters only because I'm a quest hoar. wtp are dex shoes and earrings? Too much of a luxury.
To pay for everything, I have two married characters that I APQ on when I'm short on money. Other than that, I'm not really motivated to get a lot of money...I can't understand people who are always dealing with hundreds of millions of mesos. I never have more than 100m, because long before I get anywhere near that number I lose motivation to make money, and it stays that way until I spend what I have. And I manage fine. I pay for all my pots, and I train almost as fast as everyone else. There's no dependency on NX at ony point.

Yeah, same thing, I only APQ when I need an urgent upgrade (say for example I just hit 70 and need to gain ~35mil to buy a decent Scarab.. lol)
PQ for a 50% chance to an apple is not super profitable (can only run 4 per day) but it is reliable, and I don't need all my super awesome gear to kill Geists easily (hell my 92 DK has practically soloed the boss in worst case scenarios and it took less than half an hour)
