As a guy going into IT, I fear for my children. (If i have any)

He went overboard. The way he shot the laptop and then says "this comes from your mom" was as if he was thinking of his daughter while shooting, very creepy.

To me, it seems this guy cares more about his reputation than disciplining his daughter. He says he posted it on her daughter's facebook so other parent's would "learn" to deal with similar issues while her daughter's friends would learn doing something like that can bring concequences. But if that was really the objective of this then why would he address it directly at her daughter? He talks directly to her the whole video even tough she shouldn't be able to watch this. Why was it necessary to say all of that in a video for everyone to watch? Maybe he's the kind to supress his feeling deep inside just to act tough and cool in public. Whats the freaking point of shooting her laptop? he trying to send a deeper message maybe?

To me, he just wants to save his reputation, trying to show he has b@lls and no kid will come to mess with him, blood related or not. Also the fact he seems to like weapons goes to show he might be a violent person...

Or maybe he warned her about this kind of thing once before and the day after he upgrades and basically makes her lap top useable again the first thing she does is bash all the adults in her life. Ya know the ones who busted their asses to give her the life she now has. Perhaps a little overboard but hey the laptop was basically his anyway the only thing she had really paid for atm was the frame that holds the hardware in.

She deserved it he probably posted it to show her friends and other parents that this kind of crap is unacceptable and there are consequences for your actions. This was hers. Lets put it this way I bet she wont ever do something like that again. if she does shes rather foolish and really needs a belt to the ass. Which I'm sure with a father whose willing to pull a .45 on her laptop is quite familiar with it.

What I'm curious to know is how he knew his daughter posted that message in the first place.

I think it's more likely he wants to discipline his daughter than his reputation, and obviously he probably knows his daughter will see the video somehow.

He said he would shoot her laptop the last time she got grounded, so there was that.

He's talking to her directly because it would be weird as hell to say to talk otherwise. "Hey parents, I have this kid named Hannah. She wrote this Facebook message that said blah blah blah blah....wow, so yeah, that's why I'm grounding her.

So folks this is why I'm shooting her laptop. Bam. Bam."

And there's no point having the entire internet know you're tough and cool unless you have serious mental problems, and I'm fairly certain he doesn't.

Laptop upgrade is probably a quick ram job and reinstalling the OS.

That costs only $130?

Ram only costs around $20 per gig. $130 for software update sounds like a new operating system. The six to seven hours of putting in the new hardware though makes me think that he bought in a new fan or graphic's card and reconfigured stuff through BIOS. But I don't know why you would replace anything in a laptop aside from RAM as the casing for most laptops are small and makes it inconvenient to replace parts. And also that laptop looks like it's too small to really offer a lot of room for changes. Can anyone identify what type of computer it is?

He mentions she did it once before, not multiple times, and even then we don't know the time gap between both events. We don't even know the time gap between her post and his dad finding out. For what I get from the video, he spotted that post while he was upgrading her comp. She probably had her comp to remember her Facebook password.

Anyway, my point is, even if there had been a point on making the video, there was no point on making it public. If he said the same things to her personally, there was no point for saying it all in again in a video. If he said nothing of what's in the video to her in person (which she isn't supposed to watch anyway) then it accomplishes nothing at all. If he wanted her friends and her parents to learn what she did is wrong he could have talked directly to them about how it is wrong and what to do, not to her.

Either he made it a show so people would actually watch and pay attention or his ego was hurt and he wanted to help it heal by showing everyone "whose the boss".

Well, he said software only. Antivirus perhaps?

Or the daughter could've not made her rant a "show, too." I think he was angling for the "revenge" and "karma" outlook.

If I was the parent I probably would've just tossed the laptop out some window.

That would have been awesome without being creepy. "So well, I spent 130$ updating your laptop yesterday... *throws out of a 5th floor window*... I hope you enjoy it my dear"

I recognize what she said about "I will hate to see the day when you're unable to whip your ass on your own" was very tough, but I can't take away the thought he is doing to her laptop what he wish he could do to his daughter (harm her rnot kill her).

having grown up with a (step)father like this, it's hard to say anything, if i hadn't decided to keep my personal life out of the computer, you'd have heard about it already.

dad obviously overreacted, he probably does it a lot, would you not say it's stressful?

of course, swearing so hard on a public site doesn't help her case either. even if for venting.

anyways, i won't say crap about this, don't know enough about what goes in their home to know.

Did the girl deserve a lesson? Yup.

However, what kind of message are you sending if you correct her in the exact same way you're trying to teach her not to do (ranting in front of all her friends vs. uploading a video onto youtube that her friends can see)? I know this is public, but to the daughter it will look like punishing her in the exact way that he's telling her is wrong.

Also, something like this does not teach the daughter not to do it next time. This teaches her to be sneakier next time. This doesn't solve the problem. All it does is make the daughter hate her dad.

My dad decided to teach me about maturity by humiliating me on youtube and shooting bullets through my computer.

Both of them are in the wrong, simple as that.

Neither of them are "more wrong" than the other.

The hardware's still money. Besides, if he only wanted to take the part he paid for, he could have just wiped out all the software as opposed to blowing the whole thing up. All this does is build more hatred between the two. You know, ranting is a way of cooling anger. People rant all the time, and usually, when people are angry, they do many things they usually won't do. The words she wrote, could have been all empty. It's like how couples argue, and in the end they regret fighting each other.

Consider this: maybe there's a misunderstanding between parent and child. Rather than demolishing her computer and enjoy it as if he were shooting her himself, recording the event, and sharing it for the whole world to see, they could have counseled it out. This is overboard. What he did can result in social humiliation (which can scar people), and waste money.

Unfortunately, we don't know the specifics of their problem, but what if she felt she was mistreated? What if she just couldn't feel that gratitude he wants because she doesn't know how hard her parents work? Why not tell her that in front of her face? Sure she can be oblivious, stupid, and foolish, but violence (beating her up) can't fix stupidity. In fact, if you knock someone in the head too much, you just injure that person's brain. Wow, that sure helps getting your point through.

They could have discussed about their problems, be less violent to each other's personal belongings, and actually understand each other more, like a family should. But looking at this guy, I'd say that he won't be able to see it in multiple perspectives. tldr? Both are at fault and they could have just counseled it out, which can fix problems as opposed to making their resentment to each other deeper.

Which means she felt the same about it and he was not acting individually, he was just willing to take the brunt of the heat for it from the public.

As much as I believe in the importance of the dollar, violence against objects will never be the same as violence against a person, no matter how expensive the object may be. Not necessarily by my standards, but certainly by social and moral standards, which are the important ones in this case. If he made a video shooting his daughter a bunch and posted it on youtube...well, you know.

Wonder if he did talk to her in the past before.

It's not gurranteed but it is a high likelyhood. Judging by the video I think it's a pretty valid educated guess.

Corn Wrote:Wonder if he did talk to her in the past before.

I'm guessing he did. If they've argued before it's most likely that they've talked it out, but she didn't do anything about it other than complain and rant about it.

His actions are justified and it feels like those saying dad went overboard somehow feel for the girl. What she did and what she sounds like (spoiled brat), makes her deserve a very special punishment, even though she's like every other teenager. Some agree to throwing the computer out of the 5th floor but not shooting it... what's the difference? Also, assuming it won't be educational is silly. Just because you didn't learn that way but you turned out fine doesn't mean it shouldn't work for everyone else. At least he's "beating" her computer not her. Talking and being a nice parent might work for some but if it doesn't tough punishment should be "allowed".
I don't see why everyone thinks the punishment is absurd, or whatever. Iirc, the ones who have posted that dad went overboard aren't parents. I'm not either but I guess it's hard to raise a child without tough-love every now and then. It's not like talking, understanding each other, etc will be enough for everything everytime. I'd like to see what people who were and are parenting think about it.
