Turned out I'd signed up for and installed MSEA instead of Global. :B
I did the same mistake too xD my gms char is in windia
@above
I had it much worst . I was level 11 and just arrived in lith. No idea a taxi exists and kept dying. I finally reached henesys and could no longer go further due to pigs. Untill someone offered to kill monsters for me until I reached ellinia. I never wanted to leave ellinia ever again

117 base dex and not maxing out max hp increase till 3rd job. I also didn't roll stats (8 base int 9 base luk) and put some points to hp at maple island
Played that DK for over 2 years, till Yellonde came out. Didn't have b-code for account and I needed it to delete chars back then. That's why I just lived with messed up stats.

Exactly why I made my mistake, the URL was so misleading, I thought it was Global!
A more generic answer, practically on the same day as my last answer: I didn't have enough INT to advance my magician until level 11. I thought I needed more STR because I was hitting so low (this was back in the dice-rolling days).

*Note: playing same character when I started*
"How do I throw stars?" felt like I was spamming that for awhile before I learned what a "claw" was.
Balanced my stats at 10 because the 4 from the perfect roll didn't "feel" right to me. (Later got 'em reset <3)

- High luk mage for finding better items
- High str mage for easier levelling on noob island
- Thinking "omg I'm going to level so much faster than anybody else now" after finding a Wooden Sword from a snail
- Flaunting some forum about how rich I was since I had like 20 ores in total! (2 of them were orichalcon and the discription said they were rare!)
- Calling someone pro because he had max magic claw xD I was all like "woooow cool"
- Throwing away icicle because "why would a sin buy this from me, it's gone in one attack" ---> Didn't knew how recharging/stars worked
- Merching undead charms in henesys xD Wasn't a big success... Gave up after an hour of spamming and no buyers.
Good memories:
- Wild boar parties hehe
- Spending days gathering to forge a Gold Manute for a friends birthday and making him super happy with them (they were pretty rare because no mob dropped them)
- Hunting werewolves for days with same friend for an evil wings, we never got one

Successfully got 5 attack on a level 35 glove using scrolls from quests - and then proceeded to use DEF scrolls on the remaining slots so I won't have such a difficult choice between wearing that glove and a higher level glove with better DEF.
In fact, I really thought DEF counted for something, so I skipped Rage to max Iron Body. Only got Rage at the end of 3rd job. Fortunately Crusaders had a ton of useless skills, so nothing useful got shorted.
Other than that, the usual: "balanced stats" on my first char, put a few points in HP, sold a claw att 60% for 100k, etc.
Unrelated: someone please fix this thread's title "were", not "we're"...

My first character, a mage:
- too much STR because i thought i needed it to kill stuff
- first skill point went into mp recovery, leading to me not able to kill anything
- spent the very small meso amount that i had on a level 8 mage top to try and get with the fantasy image
- explored too much and ended up stuck in the wrong place (perion i think) and unable to get anywhere without dying
oh and another character i made i leveled to 16 as a beginner for some reason because i thought it would be easierto get levels :f6:

I thought you only got 1 skill point per level. After starting a Mage first, I saw all the high skill maxes, and immediately made a new character.
I thought every character needed the same stat requirement. I made a Warrior with 25 Str and the rest was balanced stats by Level 10. I couldn't job advance until 12.
I thought training at old school Stumps was good EXP (For anyone who doesn't know how bad they were back then....they weren't even remotely acceptable EXP).
I turned down a Pan Lid because it had 8 DEF. I thought it was bullshit that I got the minimum stats possible.

Typical stuff here, allocating AP in all stats since I was fresh off of RO; spending the little money I had at the time on equipment in the shops and getting stuck in a never ending death cycle of being stuck on my first warrior in Perion; being dumbfounded when I was talking with a "high level" 4x in '05 when we were talking about equipment and he vanished and reappeared with a full set of what I only had one piece of at the time because I didn't know about town warp scrolls (he gave it to me which was a very nice boost); giving up on a server when I lost a steel plate I earned via iron hogs for a glove to a storage rollback; and of course, as has been said, starting the game in the first place.

Oh god where do I start?
1. Got stuck in El Nath, couldn't leave the place because I kept dying. Spent 3 days begging people for mesos and someone finally was generous.
2.Decided to "balance" my AP, having 40 luk, 90 dex, 200 str, and 50 int on a warrior.
3.Buying gach and getting a claw att 30% while dexless sins were the big thing. Preceded to trade it for 100 crow feathers. Dropped the crow feathers in a drop game. FML

Built all stats without knowing LUK and INT were useless for a warrior... which required a re-build.
Built Iron Body (pre-Big Bang) without realizing it was useless at the time... which required a rebuild... again.
Listened to someone say DEX for a warrior (pre-Big Bang) was useless... only later realizing I couldn't attack worth squat and needed it.
Sold an Elemental Wand 5 (w/ Blue Font Label) right after they were originally released for 1 Billion mesos, when I probably could have gotten more.
Didn't buy more 2x EXP Cards (like the timed monthly cards) when they were still available.

DEX was useless back then. All you needed was accuracy, not DEX. Adding LUK is a better investment for a warrior to add than DEX because it lowers % loss per death, adds avoid and still gives accuracy. Not that you should add LUK anyway.

Started with warrior
-> Added points into HP for survivability
-> Added points into MP for... MP
-> Added points into INT for additional MP
-> Added SP into MP recovery because I never had enough money to buy MP pots. (well, I guess back then that wasn't considered an error)
Man, I remember a fuk load of time wasted standing still in the slime tree on my 1xs. Those levels just never ended.
And then I remember how happy I was that I got my first job advancement (fighter), only to find out that it was more of the same for 40 more levels, each of them a crap load harder than the previous one. All the while keeping tight ropes on the potion funds because back then I was always on the verge of poorness.
Horrible.
edit: NPC-ing a maple weapon. I thought 100k was an insane amounts of money.

DEX hasn't been useless, even after Big Bang. The problem is people automatically associate DEX with Accuracy. DEX actually fuels several things for warriors that are useful. Accuracy, Avoidance, and reducing the gap in the ATT range to allow for more controlled damage rates.
Even if Accuracy is now more than useless, Avoidance and ATT range are still viable uses for raising it. And raising LUK on a warrior is pointless. At best you can only reduce EXP loss by 50%, but to do that requires a tremendous amount of LUK which is fairly high even by comparison to DEX.

er..
Pre-BB Avoid: DEX * 0.25 + LUK * 0.5
Post-BB Avoid: DEX + (LUK * 2)
Pre-BB Accuracy: DEX * 0.8 + LUK * 0.5
Post-BB Accuracy: LUK + (DEX * 1.2)
As for your EXP loss per death comment, it's (5 + 20 / Base LUK)% so 20 base LUK alone would lower it from 10%->6%.
Balancing damage range on weapons back then might have been correct, but not after-BB.

I thought a rogue was a mixture of 2 jobs.
I thought the magic guard fairy showed up above everyone when they used a portal.
My poor first bowman had even stats. My 2nd character (a mage) had Str..

Terrible skill build since August 2008, had to remake my bandit in December 2008 after lvl 30, and didn't screw up.

I thought thiefs only needed dex so I added no luck at all. When I used Lucky 7, I was only hitting 1's.
