Thunda Wrote:Red wine is supposed to be good for you, in moderation. Beer doesn't seem to have these effects in any amount, small or large, but as long as he doesn't binge, it should be fine.

The limits in the United States in regards to drinking are rather conservative in comparision with those from other places like Western Europe (Spain, in particular). Drinking is part of the mainstream culture (not just college lifestyle) there.

This is true. When I was living in Spain(about 4 years), I used to stay at my mom's friend house until we got our own home, and everyday at dinner, there would be a bottle of Red wine on the table, they drink about 1-2 glasses a day.

Alloy can probably support this statement since he lives in the area I used to live.

But it does increase your imagination temporarily

That's what all French people think. Funnily enough they don't have a lower heart attack ratio.

Why haven't you drank a shot of ethanol already? I told you, it's good for you, so do it!

nah going to sleep now, i'll research before i drink.

see how much i should drink and what i should drink.

OMG i just noticed that the reason they give a age limit for drinking is because they don't want kids to be too smart >.>

according to google, drinking does make ur smarter ....

Research? Worthless use of time. It's alcohol. Drink it. Lots. You want to be smarter, don't you? Don't let the man hold you down.

So you know one smart guy who drinks. I'm sure you've also heard of really old people who smoke continuously but are still healthy. So?
If you look around, you'll see a lot of people who drink much more than your friend does, and are incredibly stupid. And that's not even counting the drunk homeless.
Drinking does not make you smarter.

However, a drop of alcohol also does not immediately turn your brains to pudding, the way they try to make you believe in school. A glass of wine or a beer with your dinner isn't going to have much of an effect on your health, good or bad.

So why do they lie to kids at school? Because they don't want you acquiring a taste for alcohol. One beer is harmless. Passing out drunk every night is bad for you. Drunk driving is bad for you and everyone around you. How to draw the line? Too many people are unable to limit themselves, and so to prevent overdoing it, you're just forbidden to touch the stuff at all.

The only reason why wine can be good for you is because it contains antioxidants, not because of alcohol. Alcohol is bad for your body, but people consume it anyway. I drink wine almost everyday and the hard stuff is for when I don't have exams or midterms or papers coming up. Obviously I'm not an idiot, just because people drink doesn't mean that every person who drinks is a complete moron.

Amen to that, lady!

I drink occasionally too, just on weekends. Why weekends?

a) I don't work (much) on weekends.
b) Mondays, I usually don't have exams.
c) Weekends, people go out and party (or sometimes Fridays!).

I have a B average in all of my classes in college right now, drinking doesn't affect how I think, to be honest. Unless I'm down-right drunk, my gf has seen me drunk, along with my friends. They say I'm a 'happy-drunk' anyways.. -shrugs-

I don’t know what to think really. There is always one lot of research that proves something and another that disproves it.

I see nothing wrong with the odd drink now and then though.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long-term_e...of_alcohol

This article seems to touch on a lot of what has been discussed here. Mainly, that alcohol in moderation is good for heart health, due to increasing coronary blood flow, and reducing clotting agents. Studies quoted in the article list that moderate drinkers are less likely to have heart attacks, and even mentions that it might lower risk for diabetes, and slow the progression of dementia in Alzheimer's patients.

But this is talking, at most, possibly 1-2 drinks per day. Maximum. How many can honestly keep to that amount, without finding themselves after a period of time needing more to receive the same satisfaction?

I can't believe this thread still exists.

Alcohol does not make you smarter. Talk to a trashed girl outside a party and she thinks that she's probably the smartest one around but after attempting to strike a conversation, "Hey A-a-a-a- bluuuuuuurgh." I don't want to even get into the scientific aspect of considering ethanol to be a psychoactive component because this argument is frankly absurd.

Horusmaster your friend is a little punk who probably attempts to win over friends by playing the part of the "drunk frat boy" who gets high scores on his exams. Such people do exist, but it is not because alcohol increased their brain's ability to function. It is because they were smart to begin with and they are ruining what mental capacities they already started with.

Frankly put, I think your friend enjoys screwing around with you by manipulating your naitivity. He probably thinks you're his little ----- because you're frankly stuck in a existential box where your life force is surrounded by high scores, a constrictive mother, and other common socio-political issues that are common to nearly every human being.

Simply put you are boring. People have recommended that you should drink because they are trying to help promote change within your completely linear and un-interesting lifestyle. Instead of researching about it and stuck in this retarded ass limbo, you should just find several cans of beer, chug them down, and tell us whether or not you have gotten smarter.

I'm hoping that you're not like this in public, because you will be the kid that no one likes in college.

To me, this question is as absurd as considering the idea, "Is the sky red?"
You could provide answers around the question by saying, "Oh the moon refracts light from the sun and it seemingly has an influence in the fact we have see a blue hue, but there is a possibility that this refracted light could potential hold some red that is not seen by the naked eye" or you could say, "there is some red during sunset."

But these are explanations around the general answer. The fact that, "No you bloody moron, the sky is not red, it is blue. It is freaking blue and you must be a goddamn imbecile to not realize this in the first place."

P.S. I've always thought that alcohol was 80% placebo and 20% realistic results.

A very dear friend of mine is going to Yale next year (currently in an ivy league school), and they go out partying every couple weeks.

I personally drink occasionally, maybe once every week and im currently in college for Mechanical Design (eventually going for my BS in Engineering, maybe someday a masters).

Overall i think it has a lot less of an effect than people think. Drinking itself doesnt seem harmful to me, especially done in moderation. The bad thing is mixing it with other activities such as driving, boating, etc.

Alcohol is a relaxant, it helps you relax, ie loosen the muscle, which increase blood flow. That's why some feels hotter after a few drinks, it's because the blood travels more, carrying heat and oxygen to the body more.

Wine has antioxydant, which kills off free radicals we're absorbing daily. These antioxydants help reduce our stress level, as well as the stress placed on the body. It also slows down our aging process. The proof isnt absolute (yet), but if you compare those who lives in mountains, where they absorb a much smaller amount of free radicals, they have a longer life span (on average) than those lives in the city, closer to smogs etc.

Moderation is the key here. The French has a few glasses of wine every day and you cant say they're one of the dumber race. The average is 4 standard drinks for men and 2 for women IIRC. Any more than that will start harming your body.

How? Alcohol makes your organs works more than necessary to get rid of it. It also causes dehydration, and 2/3 of since our body is make up of water, you can figure out the rest.

Bottom line, how often you drink doesnt matter, moderation does. Doing 15 shots one night per week isnt the same as 2 per day. Too much of anything isnt good for you.

Lol, there's still no absolute answer....

I guess this thread is divided into 2 arguments 1 saying alcohol is good for you and 1 saying alcohol is bad for you.

Well, for me I find out that since it doesn't make you stupider, I'll just give it a try. I don't care if it's "harmful" for you or "beneficial" for you. cause cmon everything is harmful for you, when you walk by a guy smoking, you might get lung cancer...

I'm pretty healthy despite that I have to smell smoke everytime I walk out of school property... (No i'm not gonna smoke cause I don't like the smell...)

I have asked all of my friends that drinks, they are all pretty smart. (maybe it's just because that they are asian lol...)
All of them immigranted to Canada in recent years and was drinking before they came here.

So... um.. drinking in mi country IS part of our mainstream culture. However, it doesn't imply that is good and healthy. I live in Argentina, were wine is a very popular drink, and many studies support the fact that half a glass of red wine every night helps you with your blood circulation.

And as far as I'm concerned, injuries that can affect your body appear after chronic drinking.

And no, alcohol won't make you smarter, but (screw other ppl opinions) getting high is a different experience. Smoking pot once a year wouldn't kill me, and I tried. The emotions, feelings and stuff you get are kinda appreciated in a different way, making you imagine things are twisted.

There is proof that some famous and smart people smoked marihuana while they were studying (Sigmund Freud is an example) and they were brilliant.

So it's up to you choosing.

Then I'd suggest doing the same as Albert Einstein, marry your cousin. It's proven that he was married to his cousin. Eek
