Game of the Year
#21
Look at this :

http://www.g4tv.com/vgdm/best-game-2011/...wardsword/

HOW THE F'UCK IS THAT A FAIR COMPARISON? The damn round ends BEFORE Skyward Sword is released! How the f'uck are people supposed to know the game is good BEFORE they can get their hands on it?

God damn it. I hate these companies so much.

They also have Skyrim vs Minecraft solely because "they're games you can spend tons of hours on."

What the flying f'uck is wrong with you, G4 dumbasses?

Yes people get butthurt if their game loses, and big headed if their game wins, but damn isn't it that way for every competition ever? You're happy if your team wins a football game and yelling at the ref when your team loses

I think you guys are making too big of a deal out of it. It doesn't matter who wins or loses since it won't effect what any of you buy or play.

Normally I don't mind the GOTY stuff, I tend to like it. In the case of Spike's VGAs though, it's based on which company throws more money at Spike to get their game to win.
VGAs have ALWAYS been rigged, which is why it has such a massive hating for it.

I'm pretty sure they matched Bethesda vs Mojang because of the whole "Scrolls" court incident. They just had to throw in something for the description because they're not exactly going to say "UH OH GUYS they duked it out in court and now they're duking it out here!!".

I don't know why they went to court in the first place... Nobody calls Elder Scrolls Oblivion: Skyrim "Scrolls" for short, they call it friggin Skyrim. So how would there be any confusion?

案山子 Wrote:Except Portal 2 is realistically just DLC for Portal 1. It's the exact same game, just slightly different challenges.

You're still in the same environment, using the same character, against the same character, solving the puzzles in the same way, etc.

Technically, you're not against the same character the whole game.

Also puzzles aren't solved the same way with all of the gels and tubes and such.

Graphics are so much more better than the first one. Humor is a lot more prevalent besides just the GlaDOS quotes. The characterization is so much...okay, I'll admit there's only one more real character. Fine. At least Valve's characters have ten times more character than other games, you gotta admit.

Storyline is also so much better. The area seems (I SAID SEEMS) so much less linear than just going through chamber through chamber through chamber.

It's just...I dunno. It contains enough of Portal 1 for the nostalgia effects, but so much new stuff and storyline than I can firmly declare that is so much better than the first Portal.

Anyways if you're calling Portal 2 the DLC of Portal 1 you might as well call all Zelda Games DLC of the first Zelda, all Gears of War Games DLC of the first Gears of War, all Mario Kart Games the DLC of the first Mario Kart, and all Call of Duty Games DLC of the first Call of Duty.

Oh wait.

Voted for Portal 2 for everything except for best multiplayer.

I also think how it's unfair they split Portal 2 fans on the best male character role: Cave Johnson or Wheatley? Dammit.

Oh wait.

And you're assuming I don't find all of those games to be in the same category? Gears of War games are DLC, as well as Call of Duty, and even new Mario Karts (Since you can't have DLC of a SNES game). Zelda? No.

Legend of Zelda games provide actual new content, not just a few changed scenes and a couple of new gimmicks. The only things that remain the same are what need to remain the same: The main characters. Other than that if you play one Zelda game it is absolutely nothing like the next one you play except for, again, the main character. (Though arguably not actually the ''same'' character necessarily)

If you play Zeldas today and think they're anything like the Zelda games of the past then you're a damn retard, whereas if you compare a Gears game to another Gears game you would see that it's virtually the same thing. Portal 2 offered almost nothing different than Portal 1, so how is it wrong to say it's pretty much just DLC? They changed not even a handful of things and called it a brand new game. Yeah, you paid full price for that pomegranate, I know.

Portal 1 deserved to win pomegranate, yeah, but 2? No. It was pretty much just Portal 1 all over again. Well, I guess maybe bouncy goop and slippery goop make it a whole new game? Nah.

Either way it doesn't even matter seeing as how the gaming industry/community are like Nexon and their playerbase: The companies hand pomegranate to the consumers and the consumers eat it up. Everyone's had to lower their standards so awards can still even be given.

I think it's unfair how you're calling an extra "double the gametime of Portal 1" a DLC.

I'll be back with a better argument. I truly feel that Portal 2 is a vastly superior game to Portal 1, but I don't know why.

Edit: I'm feeling upset. I joined everyone with the hype about Portal 2. I worked extra at my job to get enough cash to buy Portal 2. True, I did not play at midnight release, but I played it as soon as possible. I enjoyed every goddamm moment of that game. I do not regret spending $60 on some "DLC."

Now for something I do regret...Black Ops. I had Cod 4, 5, 6. Again, I did the same as Portal 2. I joined the hype. I worked extra hours. I bought it...and wondered why I didn't just play MW2. It just felt the same to me
.

But Portal 2! Why did I feel like I did not regret my money buying it!?! Why do I feel it is probably the greatest game ever made, when every point you bring up makes it seem like a carbon copy of Portal 1, while a great game by itself, is not the "greatest game in the world" on my list.

I'm pondering, and pondering, and there's only one thing that I can think of.: the new characterization.

You're probably thinking "wtp. There's only one new character you bloody idiot."

True. There is only one new character, and he's not even alive. If you also count Cave Johnson he's just recordings at the moment.

But...there's so much...emotion and feeling! I can sympathize with him! I can laugh my butt off at these 1.5 new characters! I never done it with any other game. Pokemon, Cod, Starcraft, League of Legends, Kingdom Hearts, Left 4 Dead 2, Zelda, all of those Mario Games on my Wii...I never relate with them! I cannot identify with really any of the characters! I cannot bring myself to actively imagining talking to them while playing the game! But Portal 2, even though Wheatley is just some scripts, is...I dunno! He's more damm real than all of the "humans" I ever met in video games! Even Cave Johnson, who was a crazy psychopath...is realistic! I don't know why! He was half crazy! But he wasn't one of those villains who wanted to take over the world for no reason! No! He was one of those purist scientists! Even though he's insane, I can identify more with him that any dumb NPC in Pokemon, or Mario, or the buff dudes in Gears of War, and a lot of characters in Zelda. While Valve just added 1.5 more main characters...they make them count! They're utterly amazing characters! They must be amazing, because that's the only thing I can think of which truly separates Portal 1 from Portal 2, the land of the great and the land of the legendary. Also...the added humor! I was eager to play Portal 2 just to hear more GlaDOS quotes. But... I got so much more! I honestly did not expect

 Portal 2 spoilers

I eagerly raced through the game as fast as I could, just like the old times when I got a new Harry Potter book. I was yearning to learn the plot. I also did not get bored of the puzzles. Get this: the puzzles aren't the damm same. Only the first one was the same, but it was the same to get the nostalgia flowing in, and to see Aperture Science destroyed. I was never like "Oh, this room is basically the same concept as that other chamber back in Portal 1." If I had to use portal jumping, fine. I never used it the same way as Portal 1. I had to think even further outside the box about how would I use portal jumping to get from Point A to Point B. 2 times I didn't even think of using Portal jumps which led to my downfall of getting stuck at an area for like 30 minutes. But...I enjoyed those minutes. I wanted my brain pondered. If you found Portal 1 easy, chances are, you'll find Portal 2 easy. However, if you found Portal 1 hard, no, the experience playing the game won't make Portal 2 a lot easier. You'll find Portal 2 just as hard.

I'm happy now. I figured out what truly matters in a game to me. This is why I think Portal 2 is the best game ever.

DrRusty Wrote:Every sequel is going to be very similar or else they would just give it a new title and call it a new game. Starcraft 2 is the same thing as starcraft 1 with updated graphics and units.

I'm also rooting for as many Portal 2 wins as possible

Bad comparison. The only thing Starcraft 2 and Brood War have in common is the setting, the basic premise (gather resources, build structures, produce an army to kill the enemy structures) and some of the units. The single player campaign broke the "play through 10 missions as each race, watch some cutscenes" mold entirely. The multiplayer game is completely different and you couldn't just describe it as a map pack for the original game.

You can say that about any sequel. Just like the portal 1 and portal 2 argument. The basics are the same (just like starcraft 1 and 2) but there's a lot of new stuff and changes. Obviously starcraft 2 is going to be much different from starcraft 1 compared to portal1 vs portal2 since starcraft 1 is like 50 years old.

saying that sequels are DLC of the first is an opinion I can understand but disagree with

I personally think Portal 2 is different enough from Portal 1 to be a sequel but what do you think of the yearly sports games or FPS releases?

I think those are genres that are pigeonholed into being the same thing year after year. There's not much you can do to make one football game different from the next football game because if you try to make it too different then it won't be a football game.

Racing games sort of fall into the same problem, but they have a lot more wiggle room than an FPS or a sports game.

Wtp at the comment for "Best Graphics":

Quote:I'm suprised Skyrim isn't included. Considering it has the best graphics available at the moment. Not even Witcher or Crysis could beat it.

Really? Skyrim graphics are horrible. Rocks, even meat look like they are made of metal or something:

 Spoiler

Characters are too unrealistic for 2011 too:

 Spoiler

Compare to battlefield 3 (I wonder why it isn't nominated there)
