Theory on Permanent CS Equips
#21
Sooo...who else is hoping "Maplestory 2" fails so that we don't have to buy another set of "permanent" equips?

Warcraft 3 runs better on my computer than MapleStory. 3D isn't necessarily more advanced than 2D.

That has nothing to do with the graphics of either game though; it's entirely thanks to Nexon's poor coding.
If someone really wanted to do so, they could make a game with 8bit graphics that ran more poorly than any other game out there.

3D imagining is more advanced and more resource demanding. With 2D, the rendering process is far more simple since it's basically just loading an image and displaying it. There's no shading, no shadows, no texture-mapping, or any of those other things that make up a 3D image. I mean, you could pre-render the models, but that's pretty much a by-gone trend when it comes to games.

This discussion actually has me curious as to how well my machine can run Vindictus...

It's only a week long, and after that week there will be new players who will be buying regular pet stuff. I don't see any correlating problems that can lead to the theory that Maplestory is dying. Besides, Bind Cubes will always bring in revenue to Nexon because we all want better gear.

They may release a maplestory 2, it may be 3D...

But Maplestory will always get business from people like me with rather old computers, and that's actually a rather large market.
So the money is gonna be in maplestory for at least another 3 years I think, when we hit the point where Pentium 4 computers are like, ancient pieces of garbage that even homeless people would throw away, then a big chunk of maples market will vanish and who knows what will happen then.

In short people play maplestory BECAUSE their computers suck. meaning the 2D format is quite a valuable part of the game. Also, 2D games rock, their are hitting on so many points with the 2d game, they are filling their niche. Yeah they could do it a bit better, but their code is getting better all the time, they just fixed the win7 problem etc. It's almost like we're watching the development team grow up.

I'd rather see a Maple Story 2 succeed, being a successor built with all the mistakes of the original (AND FFFFING SECURITY HOLES.) in mind.

As far as the theory goes, its doesn't make sense because of 2 things.

1: Maple Story itself has gone through several major revamps to match its more contemporary competition.

2: Why let a profitable asset die if it still carries potential.

We've had, and are still having major updates to the game. Maple Story will continue to have players who even with the existence of MS 2 will want to finish what they have started here for a long time. Nexon has already invested an admirable amount of money into the game too so if it can still continue to generate money, then it makes sense to let it do so instead of pulling the plug, even if it is much less than it does now.

But doomsday theories aside, I think the true reason we're getting permanent stuff is because in a way, items such as gachapon and miracle cubes 'paid' for it. and keep in mind players are going to hop alternate characters a lot more since its easier to level them. They're not losing as much as people think, at the same time, things like this make the game more appealing and accessible.

Actually most of the people I'm aware of don't play it because they have bad PCs; it's already been demonstrated to have been coded so poorly most decent modern games can be played much more effectively on anything that handle Maple.

The thing that draws people is the simplicity of design and the nostalgia of the old 2D platformer games. Sometimes people don't want to be immersed in super realistic 3D graphics and just wanna chill with a dorky 2D sprite game reminiscent of yesteryear. Like video-game equivalent of potato chips. Bland looking, but tasty comfort food (even if it is slowly killing you by loading you with fat and toxins).
It's not having what you want - It's wanting what you've got.

Nexon just donated $1m USD to Japan. You really think they were that generous and didn't have something to make that money back later?

I'd much rather them keep MapleStory a 2D environment with upgraded 3D graphics. Like Shadow Complex. I also would like it if my weapon didn't switch hands depending on which way I'm looking.

That's called a tax write off, hon.
