aang is 12 in the series, 13 arguably.
70 years pass and theres a new avatar, female water bender.
figure he was 12 when he was told he was the avatar, so account for the years where the new avatar had to grow up and find out she's the avatar, and then for the time where she learned the other three styles already.
that all makes me think aang died in an accident or something similar, and was younger than 62 when he died.

B) How did the first benders learn to bend if bending is genetic like that?

They learned from the original sources of their bending. For Firebenders, it was from the dragons. For Waterbenders, they learned from the Moon. For Airbenders and Earthbenders, the air bison and badgermoles.

But it's still early on, so there's definitely hope.

I'd imagine that Aang would have tried to teach many young, promising students how to airbend. I mean, the art of bending was never implied to be a genetic trait, just something that people can learn when they try hard enough. If bending had indeed been genetic, then they would never have talked about the original benders learning from animals and space rocks.

On a side note, since Aang's tattoos lit up when he went into the avatar state, what do you guys think will light up when Korra get's pissed off and goes avatar?

Context, for crying out loud. That comment was too flippant to be taken as absolute literal. It could be easily interpreted as nothing more than a dismissing the active presence and involvement of the old characters, not word for word truth, especially since they've only got 12 planned so far. It could also just mean they haven't been seen yet or involved anywhere in those first 12. It doesn't mean they were handed out notes at the begininng saying EVERYONE IS DEAD, K? It could be just an assumption/interpretation.
