As a guy going into IT, I fear for my children. (If i have any)

I'm guessing he did. If they've argued before it's most likely that they've talked it out, but she didn't do anything about it other than complain and rant about it.

His actions are justified and it feels like those saying dad went overboard somehow feel for the girl. What she did and what she sounds like (spoiled brat), makes her deserve a very special punishment, even though she's like every other teenager. Some agree to throwing the computer out of the 5th floor but not shooting it... what's the difference? Also, assuming it won't be educational is silly. Just because you didn't learn that way but you turned out fine doesn't mean it shouldn't work for everyone else. At least he's "beating" her computer not her. Talking and being a nice parent might work for some but if it doesn't tough punishment should be "allowed".
I don't see why everyone thinks the punishment is absurd, or whatever. Iirc, the ones who have posted that dad went overboard aren't parents. I'm not either but I guess it's hard to raise a child without tough-love every now and then. It's not like talking, understanding each other, etc will be enough for everything everytime. I'd like to see what people who were and are parenting think about it.
