You just cant remove one piece of the equation and expect it to be just fine.
This is the only reason I think this can be a bad idea.
Nontheless, with that said, there's been other extinctions before, and ecosystems are still going. However, if the jump is gradual enough, the ecosystem will have no problems... But there have to be ways of considering ALL of the consequences. For example, male mosquitoes don't bite, those live only off nectar, and that can be a disaster for certain plants, that couldn't reproduce. The females are the ones biting when in need of laying eggs.
