I take it you enjoy being bitten by mosquitoes all day? Nah, he won't be satisfied until they give him malaria, at the very least. Fighting Mosquitoes With Genetically Modified Mosquitoes - The Great One - 2011-12-01 How about instead of wiping out an entire population simply fix living conditions as that's a reason an incest can infect so many people but it appears that sounds too much like right for you too to even consider. Or do what we've done to so many other infections carried by a parasite and create a vaccine. Again it appears that sounds too much like right. Either that or hope a whole bunch of people get hybrid sickle cell and malaria wont be a problem. I can't believe it was this easy to solve the problem the whole time. I think he's on to something. Yea because just wiping a population off the face of the earth effecting a ecosystem which would in turn would affect these people in other ways is a much easier way out. While were at it lets get rid of rodents as well ticks any parasite you name it. Fighting Mosquitoes With Genetically Modified Mosquitoes - Baklava - 2011-12-01 But the mosquito provides nothing to the ecosystem. Fighting Mosquitoes With Genetically Modified Mosquitoes - The Great One - 2011-12-01 and the animal that eats that which also kills the plant that relied on said animal to pollinate it which kills the animal that eats the seeds of that plant which kill the animal that eats that one see where this is going. You just cant remove one piece of the equation and expect it to be just fine. This is the only reason I think this can be a bad idea. Nontheless, with that said, there's been other extinctions before, and ecosystems are still going. However, if the jump is gradual enough, the ecosystem will have no problems... But there have to be ways of considering ALL of the consequences. For example, male mosquitoes don't bite, those live only off nectar, and that can be a disaster for certain plants, that couldn't reproduce. The females are the ones biting when in need of laying eggs. Not sure if you're serious, but I agree with those against this. It's a rather... frightening thing to think about how much power we have and the possibility for it to get out of hand. Whereas if DDT had been effective in exterminating them (and poisoning the entire foodchain above them, before eliminating its food source), it would have been OK? People hear "genetic" and get all technophobic... Fighting Mosquitoes With Genetically Modified Mosquitoes - Panacea - 2011-12-01 While I find them annoying, I'm perfectly fine living with them. Nice try, though. Fighting Mosquitoes With Genetically Modified Mosquitoes - SaptaZapta - 2011-12-01 Panacea Wrote:While I find them annoying, I'm perfectly fine living with them. Or dying of the yellow fever or w/e else they give you? Very noble of you. However, that isn't what I meant. I meant to say that even now, as we speak, the people in Africa are doing their best to eradicate these deadly insects. They use whatever poisons they can. They drain or dry up swampy land. They do any number of things that have a far bigger effect on the environment than a clean excision of just A.aegypti. But you don't see all the people who are outraged at the method described in this paper, standing there with signs "save Aedes aegypti!" Maybe because the locals would tear them limb from limb. Maybe because they'd rather not catch any nasty bloodborne mosquito-transmitted disease. And maybe just because all those methods are "normal" whereas "genetic" is "abomination". |
