Unless there was a big change in the damage formula, this is simplified version (someone will make a post with all the fancy math latter, anyways) of what happens:
If you increase your stats (both primary and secondary, but the secondary stat makes little difference at higher levels/stats) by 1%, your damage will increase by 1%. If you increase your attack by 1%, your damage will also increase by 1%.
If you have 4000 mainstat and 200 attack, 40 mainstat (1%) is worth as much as 2 attack (1%). 40 mainstat : 2 attack = 20:1 mainstat:attack ratio.
Also, attack is hard to get compared to stats (you can get %stats potential on basically everything, anyways).
