So how do they know that the cells didn't get into the meteorite after it hit the earth?

The stuff they were found in dissolves in water. They believe that since it is still intact that the bacteria lived outside of Earth where there was some water. I think the paper suggests that they might have lived in the center of the comet where there was water.
