Need some friendly advice.

So there's this girl in one of my classes that I think likes me as more than a friend. (Sorry if that sounded a bit egotistical) I'd like to go out with her but the thing is I'm not experienced at all at asking women out. So far all of the girls I've been with have asked me out and not vice-versa. As you all know valentine's day is almost here and I feel that if I don't do anything to let her know I like her, she may think I only want to be friends. But I really want to build more of a friendship with her and be more certain that she likes me as more than a friend before asking her out.

I was thinking of getting her something for valentine's day just to let her know I like her and would like to be more than just friends but I'm not sure if this would be too soon to be appropriate or something. Or if I should just keep things the way they are right now and ask her out later on, or do something else(?).

Any advice is greatly appreciated
