You can't get through megaman X1 without the armor shoes though, it's pretty much required to get through the game.
But you gotta hand it to capcom to make a plot.
Megaman branches off to Megaman X sooner or later before Dr. Light dies, and Dr.Willy sends Zero to destroy everything.
Megaman X starts soon after Dr. Kain finds megaman and finishes his design and builds every other reploid based on Dr.Light's original design.
Zero comes into the picture soon after, infects Sigma with the Maverick Virus, then pomegranate hits the fan and everything becomes hostile and no one knows why.
Sigma then goes nuts, tries to corrupt megaman X to become the ultimate weapon under his control
Sigma gets blown up countless number of times, but survives because his data is spread through literly everything and the sigma virus is born.
Then in X5, depending on how you play, Zero could either become a Maverick again or stay the way he is if you happen to build the space ship on day 0.
The main plot in X5 which branches off to X6 requires you to beat sigma with Zero.
X6, zero's virus reawakens either way, you could save him, or leave him, doesn't matter.
If you beat sigma in X6 with Zero, it shows a epilogue with Zero going into hibernation for 100 years, which branches off into the Megaman-Zero plot.
Megaman X7 & X8 are basicly all about bad voice actors, but X7 was alright since it used elements from the Megaman legends series with 3D map movement, and not being configned to a platformer.
Capcom kinda realised after making X7 & X8 that they shouldn't make X9 because Axel pretty much fucked up the entire megaman X series.
