Downgrading to XP

2. You'll have to wipe out your hard drive. Dual-booting XP and Vista requires you install XP prior to Vista (if you are attempting a dual-boot). There's actually no getting around this due to the problems with the Windows Boot Loader trying to detect a legacy OS installed after a newer one. Trust me, it's a headache attempting this.

I agree with just about everything else Jamie said, but I will say that its not impossible to dual boot XP by installing it second. My current laptop is running a pre installed win7, and after MANY headaches (largely due to brute forcing trial and error) I figured out how to get XP on and dual booting properly. So it can be done, but as Jamie said, its a headache, and there are many things you need to set up prior to thinking about attempting.
