Downgrading to XP - Moonlapse - 2011-01-07

So all I really use my old Vista Desktop for is playing maple, so I have been thinking about downgrading to xp. How would I go about doing that?

Someone might know better than I do, but the only way I know of is to get a copy of XP and either partition + dual boot or completely erase vista and install XP.

you probably have to slipstream a windows xp install...

Nah, youll have to bobsled it onto the hard drive, then use monochrome mode and dual boot.

Downgrading requires several things...

1. Check and make sure your hardware has up to date Windows XP drivers. This is REQUIRED before you even think about it. Some hardware might not have drivers for Windows XP (mainly some modern video cards, sound cards, network adapters, motherboards, and modems) that fall into "Designed for Windows Vista/7" category. "Works with Windows Vista/7" is different.

2. You'll have to wipe out your hard drive. Dual-booting XP and Vista requires you install XP prior to Vista (if you are attempting a dual-boot). There's actually no getting around this due to the problems with the Windows Boot Loader trying to detect a legacy OS installed after a newer one. Trust me, it's a headache attempting this.

3. Downgrading to XP is ill advised anymore. I would actually recommend upgrading to Windows 7 and getting some minor hardware upgrades like extra RAM, faster CPU, and a newer video card. Getting a copy of Windows XP that is legal is now harder to do. Windows XP was removed from retail stores months ago and most OEMs don't even carry disks anymore to support it. Finding a working copy may actually cost you a lot more, or might be impossible.

Overall, I'd actually suggest avoiding this endeavor and going the opposite direction and get an upgrade into Windows 7 and beefing up your hardware slightly if possible and if needed. Windows XP, even SP3, had a lot of issues even I would avoid now. It's a good OS, well it "was" good to a point, but compared to Windows 7, it's almost as big a headache as Vista was at times.

And if MapleStory is the only thing giving you a headache with crashes like at Zakum, Scarlion, and such, well just disable the sound card in Device manager and restart Maple. No issues.

I agree with just about everything else Jamie said, but I will say that its not impossible to dual boot XP by installing it second. My current laptop is running a pre installed win7, and after MANY headaches (largely due to brute forcing trial and error) I figured out how to get XP on and dual booting properly. So it can be done, but as Jamie said, its a headache, and there are many things you need to set up prior to thinking about attempting.

I actually had to learn how to dump the Boot Loader of Vista, no easy task mind you which required almost destroying a perfectly good Windows Vista partition using BCDEdit, which is NOT friendly to use even on Windows 7, and then later on after installing Windows XP, using a recovery Vista DVD to reload the Vista Boot Loader using BCDEdit again.

Seriously, even as an IT administrator, I dread using BCDEdit for disk management. It's not a user friendly tool and documentation on it, even the official Microsoft stuff can be daunting at times to use. You actually can seriously destroy a partition and make disks unrecoverable if you screw up with this tool.

It's not something I'd advise to start out with. I recommended the safer method only for this exact reason.

if you still wish to go ahead, create a ghost image of your hard disk before doing anything.
If your hardware supports XP, it might be easier to get a second hard disk and install XP on the 2nd HD and use bios to switch which HD/OS to boot.

why downgrade to an OS that has tons of security flaws (more than Vista/ 7), and is no longer supported in terms of security by Microsoft? The admin password can be cracked within 30 seconds.

Completely disagreeing with this. I am totally incompetent when it comes to computers but I was able to dual boot and install XP with Vista pre-installed as well as Windows 7 (separate laptops).

Following the tutorials (via Google) was extremely easy and setting up the OS selection screen is as easy as downloading a program, and clicking a few buttons. The hard part is finding all sorts of drivers. Took me a whole night of work to gather.

To satisfy our Maple addictions of course Sad

Ray is mostly correct when it comes to the security flaws. Microsoft actually has started to phase of XP support completely.

MapleStory runs completely flawless on Windows Vista and 7, minus the major boss bug which ONLY requires disabling the Audio Device in Device Manager prior to going into the boss area. Other than the Boss Bug and Error 38 (which affects the Cash Shop) these are the two only major bugs that are affecting game play.

I stated this originally as well. Most hardware DOESN'T have proper, if any, Windows XP driver support.

If you have a SATA based system, I recommend you DO NOT attempt this. Most newer SATA systems that do not have IDE drives for at least the Optical drive or the Hard Drive will not boot Windows XP due to lack of proper drives, and most that don't have drivers require SATA/SCSI/RAID drivers from a Floppy disk and even then, most modern PCs do not have these anymore.

So you have been thoroughly warned.
