It's the same thing. Whether you're a male or female, you're a soldier. Soldier's protect their own. Gender has nothing to do with looking out for your own.
The claim was that male Israeli soldiers who had females in their (combat) units, behaved erratically, being more protective of said women than of their other unit members, and that this somehow implies gay soldiers would behave equally erratically to protect male soldiers.
