News Wrote:By ANNE FLAHERTY, Associated Press Anne Flaherty, Associated Press – 11 mins ago I'm VERY happy for this to go through, major landmark for gay rights. Gays and lesbians can now fully serve without fearing retribution from the military brass. They really deserved this; they put their lives on the line to defend the freedoms we all enjoy. They don't deserve to be treated like crap for keeping the nation safe from threats.

Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT) policy fully repealed! - FrozNlite - 2010-12-18 Grah Will you beat me to posting the thread. I was going to post earlier today when cloture was ended with a 63-33 vote, but figured I'd wait till the 3pm vote. Amazing to see it passed 65-31, though. Loving that two Republicans who voted against ending cloture voted for the bill in the end. I've hoped this policy would be repealed for a long time now, and finally, it has happened. This is surely a triumph for equality.
Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT) policy fully repealed! - FanaticRat - 2010-12-18 It's about damn time. I've never got the "disruption" argument anyway--didn't they use the same argument to keep blacks out of the military? I'd wager there's been far more people in the military "distracted" by the all too real fear that at any minute they'll be dishonerably discharged and disgraced the rest of their lives for who they're attracted to than there have ever been distracted by the fear their crew mates might be attracted to them in some way.

Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT) policy fully repealed! - Jamie_Kurosawa - 2010-12-18 But won't this now open another door to people being scrutinized by their peers in the military as well? What I mean is, under DADT what was your business was your own and it was best to keep private matters private rather than public flaunting them, lest you bring some unwanted criticism to yourself, your unit, etc. I have mixed feelings about this measure really. I mean keeping your private life private is often best reserved, but flaunting yourself openly is going to bring criticism down on yourself as well. This measure should be taken by everyone with a grain of salt as inviting criticism means you will bring both good and bad criticism as well. What will likely be the case is the same as the civilian world - gay soldiers/sailors/airmen/marines will likely let their close circle know and that's it, or they'll invite their partners to events but won't bring up the subject. Just because they CAN speak out now doesn't mean they're going to go shouting about it all over the place. Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT) policy fully repealed! - Tay - 2010-12-18 Damn. I'm glad this got repealed, but now I can't proclaim that I'm a flaming homosexual when they try to get me in the service. Grats to those who wish to serve though. Yes, but there are a percentage of people who are going to be open with their lifestyle and figure everyone should know even if a percentage of those could care less. The amount of those percents are negligible. The problem I'm stating is of those who are going to be openly public with their lifestyle are going to invite criticism whether it be good or bad, wanted or unwanted, and that will cause some reflection upon not only themselves, but others around them as well. You have to see this issue isn't all bright lights and fresh paint on a long standing social problem. It's merely a band-aid on a long standing social issue that is going to do no better than the previous regulation did, even if parts are better or worse. You can paint a room with stained walls and rotted woodwork all you want, but the underlying problems will still be there. The same could be said for literally hundreds of other traits. Religion, football teams, political views - to name a few that are high on the controversy list. What makes one's sexuality unique? Religion, football teams, political views - to name a few that are high on the controversy list. What makes one's sexuality unique? Because sexuality is more personal to someone as sexuality can span anything including religion, culture, politics, sports team, etc. Sexuality is one of the most personal social statuses anyone can have or claim. You can be a hetero or homo sexual in any culture, language, religion, region, country, political field, sports team fan circle, etc. It's a very serious social issues to deal with and often one of, if not, the most sensitive of issues at times. I mean seriously, what's more personal to someone than their sexual identification? Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT) policy fully repealed! - Hazzy - 2010-12-18 Wars have been started over religion and political views. I think those two are more sensitive than how you entertain yourself in bed. |
