It's easy for a server to block ICMP echo requests. Usually this is done to prevent a smurf attack (aka ping flooding). Also, pinging is used by malicious hackers looking for networks. Usually after a successful echo request they will perform a port scan to see insecure ports and attempt to break the system. If a ping doesn't work, I wouldn't let it concern you too much.
