I think its caused by that skull: the Zombify status condition. It causes damage to you whenever a Bishop heals you. So, you must bring your own pots (unless you wish to get pwned). and no, it is not a glitch, from what I know.
But, the statues and Pink Bean also cause other status conditions. Seduce, SKB, Stun, all of the ones we have currently (I dunno about inverted controls), I think two different Zombifies (the other is a triple skull, which I take is far more potent), and three other debuffs (refer to Fiel's page, because I dunno what they do). If you ram into the Bean, I presume you die as well. It can cast buffs on the statues too (I think).
There are elemental resistances too. >.>
