You were able to create your own theme, with a wider variety of customization options before Chrome came out. Personas have also been out a whole before the FF update, but it was as a plugin instead.
I never really had many problems with FF aside from the memory issue. This would rarely ever be bad enough to become a big problem though. I wouldn't notice performance issues much, and if I did it'd be once every other month.
I enjoy all of my plugins, and until another browser has enough of a plugin library to compete against FF (and not just half-assed ports of FF plugins to other browsers) then I don't think I'll be switching anytime soon.
Besides, if you read Chromes user agreement it gives you a sense of unease.
