How old is the router? If the router is old enough that it doesnt have MIMO support (multi-in, multi-out), then it could be doing this because of that. Only other reasons I can think of, 1) it has a set limit of connected devices (fixable in the routers settings menu), or 2) it just doesnt allow more than 1 device at a time (unlikely).
