First of all, don't follow anything posted in that image.
Second of all, get a good textbook. I'm not going to give you any directions on how to get it, but I will say that the Genki series does a pretty good job. Pirate power! Google is your friend.

You don't have to use the book as a bible though. The guide to learning a language better is not limiting yourself to just one source. The textbook is good for all around use, but there are other places you can try that teach you certain areas better.

• Use this to study the kana. Make sure you get their brush stroke order as well. You can use the next link for that. This is important, because some characters look different on the computer than they do when actually used on paper (same for English, notice "a").

• Kanji dicks! The site name may make it seem like a troll. In fact, the dude's intro makes it seem like a troll, but it's actually a pretty damn good guide. I recommended it to Isaac and he seems to like it as well.
  

DON'T rely on romanji. Jump straight into learning the kana, it'll save you the trouble later. Get some good practice material. I use manga to practice from time to time. Start out with something easy. I don't know what your tastes are, but something like Yotsuba uses very simple Japanese (don't fall into the trap of picking reading material that's 100% hiragana. The sooner you're introduced to actual kanji used in Japanese, the easier it is to get comfortable with it).

Don't take it the wrong way. Not saying "YOU WANNA LEARN JAPANESE, READ MANGA, LOL!" I have to say that manga is good practice because not only are there a lot of series with furigana (pronunciation guides for kanji, so you can look them up), but the pictures help cue you in for context clues.

If you see the character with an angry look, and their text bubble is big and or has emphasized text, it's easier to tell what would be coming out their mouth in that situation.
