I've tried Joy2Key and I haven't had any issues with it in terms of using an Aran, I don't think, though I prefer the Profiler since it allows for much larger macro combinations, whereas J2K only allows three key presses per button.
J2K on the other hand allows for fast multi-profile switching, though MapleStory characters can't possibly have enough skills to require more than one switch unless you're some sort of a macro whore (in which case, J2K wouldn't be friendly with you anyways).
Combat Step is a terrible skill to be using with a double tap, by the way, that's why you're having problems with it. Put it on a short cut on your keyboard.
It might also be a problem with the D-Pad on your controller; I recall the PS2's D-Pad being crap.
