I'm just coming back to Maple Story after about a year and so far, all I've done is work on an Aran, which are very incompatible with controllers, it seems. (Or maybe it's just mine)? I can't dash at all and my input is rarely ever fast enough to trigger any combos. I'm definitely just getting this character to 70.

Before that I was a marksman, and all my skills fit nicely on my trusty PS2 controller. I had to involve L3 and R3 but that's no big deal, as they're never pushed by accident. I used Start to switch to an alternate configuration for my buffs. Are there any other classes that work well, if played in this fashion? I was loyal to crossbowmen for a looong time before quitting.

I'm assuming bandits are right out, as the class seems to depend on being able to use an alarming number of skills, depending on the situation.

I have played a bishop with a controler, theya re easier to use than i thought, you could also use a brawler

They all work the same. If you can't fit all your skills onto your controller, I recommend you stop using a controller that's pre-Playstation 1.

I'm curious, what program are you using for your controller? I know both my husband and I have had problems with our Arans using Joy2Key, but I use the Logitech program now and it works perfectly. It feels much more natural than using a keyboard with my Aran, that's for sure.

Pirates are the only class I can think of that might have issues working with a controller.
Aran actually strike me as a good choice, since they use the same Attack key + a few combos, instead of new skills. If you hit attack 3 times within a second or two, you should do the full combo... I don't see why your controller wouldn't work. o-o

It doesn't work in the sense that there's a delay in what I've pressed and what my character is actually doing, so finishing moves are out of the question. My girlfriend uses a PC-designed controller and Joy2Key and she has the exact same difficulty with Arans.

This is the controller I have, and it came with its own program called Logitech Profiler. It's a pain in the ass to configure compared to Joy2Key, but I can't argue with its performance. The hubby downloaded a different program that also works with his Aran, but his laptop is shot at the moment and I can't remember the name of it for the life of me.

I've tried Joy2Key and I haven't had any issues with it in terms of using an Aran, I don't think, though I prefer the Profiler since it allows for much larger macro combinations, whereas J2K only allows three key presses per button.
J2K on the other hand allows for fast multi-profile switching, though MapleStory characters can't possibly have enough skills to require more than one switch unless you're some sort of a macro whore (in which case, J2K wouldn't be friendly with you anyways).

Combat Step is a terrible skill to be using with a double tap, by the way, that's why you're having problems with it. Put it on a short cut on your keyboard.
It might also be a problem with the D-Pad on your controller; I recall the PS2's D-Pad being crap.

on topic: Ive had success with the converters that change a controller plug into a usb plug. they work wonders for me.

I use an arcade stick to play my Aran, and I have to say that Aran seems the most controller friendly to me. I can't double tap to combat step, but when plying Aran I don't do that. I just assign combat step to a key. Maybe it's my arcade stick, but I find the inputs work just fine. You just have to get a bit used to the timing of it. Even if you used a keylobard, mashing the attack skill without timing will murder your finger and possibly slow your Aran down.

The only problem I have is, since I'm using an arcade stick, I can't do multiple directions at one. So I can't ↑→Ａｔｔ at the same time. To fix this I just program J2K to just read a single button press as the combo skill, but it's pretty annoying. If only maple read diagonals.

Xpadder works very well for me. Joy2Key was always very delayed but both xpadder and pinnacle games profiler are great. Xpadder has a free/ cut down features version floating around there somewhere. It's official and all, though the main site doesn't link to it.
