I'm a bit late on this thread but w/e...
When I first started Maple, I wanted to be an archer and thought that xbows weren't "real" archers so I started using bows and hated it. Switched to xbows and now I love my MM to death. I thought Iron Arrow was the pomegranate when I got to 2nd job... Pierce is even more awesome.
Being able to freeze things in 3rd job comes in handy and I still use it in 4th job with Frostprey. My Snipe is only lvl 2 atm but I'm getting excited to max it and love hitting omginsane damage with Pierce. It's nice having the versatility during training instead of sitting and spamming one attack... I almost lost my mind doing that at newts. Since I've moved to Peak, I use 6 skills in training... helps keep things interesting.
As far as bossing... I don't really care to get KSed by some NL so I don't BF or Anego and Pap's star summons still kill me without a chance (almost there on HP) so I can't really offer an opinion there. I frequently CWKPQ and Zak and don't really feel inadequate at all. I get a *tad* jealous of the BMs during the bowman stage but when we get to the boss stage, I'm usually SE mule for the melee party and get SI as well so it evens out.
Yes, Hurricane is awesome and the hard and fast numbers flying up is pretty cool to watch, but I like watching my even higher pretty pink numbers pop up. The 19x,xxx damage from Snipe still makes me a tad giddy.
Whenever I get jealous of BMs I look at the guildie BM who is 1 lvl below me. He fails epicly... he's so much weaker than me even with a bow that's 2 atk better than mine (we both have Reverses). It's lolsome.
If you're trying to chose which to be... best advice I can give is actually not to think about the differences in skills for both subclasses. Just grab a bow and xbow for your char and go kill stuff with both. If one feels more right than the other, that's what you should go with. If you don't get that feeling, I've given my input above.
