I haven't read the whole thread, but let me just throw in my two cents:
Bush's "cheap political stunts" like speeches about education were just that because he did nothing beneficial for education. Take it from the son of a teacher who has worked in the profession since Clinton, in eight years of his presidency the only prominent thing Bush did for education was the No Child Left Behind Act, legislation that was idealistic at best. It doesn't work in the reality of the American school system, with examples ranging from mentally-handicapped children to ELL students being forced to take a standardized test in English when they've only been studying the language for three weeks. None of you who support the Act have been in my mother's shoes watching a child cry because they don't understand what a question is asking and the teacher can't help because she cannot help them answer the questions, much less speak the student's foreign language.
Yet in 8 years he managed to start horribly unjustified war campaigns, use up our national surplus, and screw over the average American.
Obama actually has PLANS for education, far greater than those of our former President. If people weren't so stubborn about health care reform and took the time to become educated, both logically and emotionally (in terms of learning of the experiences of those without health care or unable to afford), we would already we done with this issue. He's so preoccupied with health care right now that we'll be lucky to get to global warming by November, an issue that was scheduled and delayed from this summer.
Bottom line, people like to whine and complain when they really don't know anything about an issue. There's a reason a term exists called "Public Awareness," and why people have to spread such awareness for almost every issue - no one bothers to educate themselves anymore. Pop culture is about having fun, getting hammered, having sex - not working to become a productive contributor to society, no matter how hard artists and celebrities work to show they personally are.
