Anyone mind explaining Zipangu?

Formosa (Taiwan) is the name the British gave them when it was under Brit control.

For Singapore's Ulu City, ulu is a malay word meaning abandoned, ruined, etc.

Interestingly, Zipangu looks to derive the same way as Taiwan does:
