If your graphics card is onboard (built in), picking up a cheap agp one off of craig's list would be my first step. Graphics cards are the easiest way to go since, if you upgrade your computer, you can put your graphics card in it too.
512mbs of ram pose a bit of a problem and its a dell so upgrading the ram would be a chore. If upgrading your graphics card isn't a solution, go to the dell website and see if you can figure out what type of ram slot it uses. Most dell computers have proprietary ram slots (that is to say that only dell ram works in them).
I have a compaq desktop that is likely as old as yours & runs on 512mbs of ram. If i put my nvidia geforce fx 5200 in it, it can run zakum but it cannot handle horntail.
