Sounds like the only reasonable thing they could do. Although those that did manage to do that event now end up with double the rewards. (And those who forgot to do it get a second chance). But I suppose finding only those who were affected was too hard.
Also a reminder: assuming it's the same box, it will only give you a character slot if opened on a char over level 100!
