I bomb him with Anti-Dragon Bombs and everything else I can do. The reason I eventually just go after his feet is because at some point that's all I have left.
It ends in one of two ways: I either run out of time meaning not enough damage was done, or he just flat-out destroys the ship. I tried using my Uragaan L/R set since that has bombardier, with a Vodyanoy Hammer (676 ATT / 150 WA)
I've just given up for now and I'm doing other quests in the meantime to try and get better gear. Thank god Jhen isn't required.
Honestly, unless you know EXACTLY what you are doing, you're probably not going to beat that solo Jhen when he is unlocked. His gear isn't really worth the frustration either, at least in my opinion, and he's not required. I would say just skip him until you're further along in the game.
To beat him, you really have to do everything perfectly. Any time he's about to body slam the boat, you have to hit the Hunting Gong to essentially KO him for about 30-45 seconds. If you're in the final stage you can go inside of his mouth and attack it, as it is his weakest spot. You must use the Ballista Binder to prevent all other types of damage, like when he tries to stab the ship with his tusks. You need to perfectly time the Dragonator so that he doesn't hit the ship but it still hits him when he does that frontal assault.
A good thing to remember is that there are several skills that will assist your damage from the Ballista shots and Cannon shots. Namely Felyne Bombadier (or whatever the name is, slow Internet so I can't look it up atm), and the same for the regular armor skill. Those significantly increase the damage you do, especially with Cannon shots. Also remember that both Ballista and Cannon shots refresh when you switch stages. I suggest using the Anti-Dragon Bombs on his tusks, as they do static damage (so it doesn't matter where you place them) and the tusks are the hardest to break. I would only attack the legs when you run out of everything if you're having trouble beating him. Also, don't forget that he's weak to Ice and Dragon. Bringing an Ice, Dragon or Slime weapon is key. They will help you break his fins.
Jhen is just like Lao, Shen and Ceadeus. They're all boring as pomegranate, and also tanks. Skip him if you can't beat him for now.
