What is the difference between hot sauce and salsa?

Dusk Wrote:In America at least, if you ask for salsa, there is a CLEAR EXPECTATION of receiving a spicy tomato-based sauce, often including ingredients such as onions, peppers, and cilantro. Salsa is typically used as a dip. If you ask for hot sauce, you expect to receive a sauce made from chili peppers, salt, and vinegar. Hot sauce is typically eaten with meats.

Additionally, salsa can also be eaten with meats, but that is usually in Mexican-style dishes.

I find that I use salsa as more of a sauce whereas I use hotsauce to give my food a small spike in flavor.
