Dual Swords are good for quick bursts of damage, but are hard to master due to Stamina usage if you don't intend to cheese and spam Dash Juice.
Great Sword is great for pot shots when the mob is distracted or otherwise standing still.
Long Sword is good if you can't aim for pomegranate, but isn't really all that great for breaking concealed parts like Barroth's arms because the majority of attacks aren't focused.
Lance and Gunlance are good for what Long Sword isn't. They can focus in on certain parts and are best when you know exactly where to hit.
Hammers are AMAZING for exhausting your enemy, due to blunt being part of every attack. Even if you don't hit the head you exhaust enemies with all blunt hits. Hammer with Stamina Thief is amazing. In P3rd I've had enemies who just ate get back into exhaust in less than a minute, it's insane. With your enemy exhausted they tend to just sit there, and are easy to slaughter. Exhausting enemies also kicks them out of rage faster.
Hunting Horn is good for self buffs and has the same exhausting ability that Hammer does, although you will likely hit less than you would with Hammer.
Bowguns are pretty multi purpose but some bowguns can just straight up suck ass. It all depends on what the ammo capabilities are.
Bows are great mobility with the ability, with the right shot and coating combination, to be extremely focused like Lances and be able to dish out large amounts of damage if you know exactly where to hit(Rapid Shot), can spread status effects quickly(Scatter Shot), or can simply do damage over the entire body easily (Pierce Shot).
I don't know much about Switch Axe's capabilities so I have no comment there.
